DRAM error with intel 13th gen

KristN

I am building a pc for a friend, I picked out the parts inspired by the recent budget build on ltt.

When I put everything together I could not boot and the motherboard showed a DRAM error light (red cpu light --> flash of the yellow dram light --> red cpu light (retry?)) and then same loop again 3-4 times.

First I though it is the memory as he accidentally picked up 3600Mhz but the i3-13100 only supports max 3200Mhz so I replaced the kit but ended up with the same issue.

On pcp (https://pcpartpicker.com/user/KristN/saved/X2VLyc) there is a bios version warning with the 13th gen (The MSI PRO-B660M-P-WIFI-DDR4 Micro ATX LGA1700 Motherboard supports the Intel Core i3-13100F 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Processor with BIOS version 7D24v25. If the motherboard is using an older BIOS version, upgrading the BIOS will be necessary to support the CPU.) So I think that might be it.

What should I do? I can't flash the bios since there is nothing like ez flash and I can't get into the bios itself either.

Yea, that's the risk with building Intel 13th with the previous 12th gen chipsets as it's highly likely you'll be getting older stock on pre-13th Gen supported BIOSes. You could go to a local computer shop that offers system builds to see if they can do the BIOS update for you with a 12th Gen chip they might have laying around. Be prepared to get charged maybe 20 bucks or so as a service fee if they won't do it for free (nothing against that, you're not entitled to free service).

Either that or return the B660 board and get a B760 board instead. Doing a quick search and the prices honestly aren't that much different.

Make sure you get an actual B760 board. Not another B660.

Why? What's the difference?

Both are compatible with the 13th gen right (with the appropriate bios) right?

There's no guarantee what BIOS any motherboard is on. There's no way for a retailer to tell you unless they open up the box and boot up the board themselves. So you're likely to end up in the same situation. B760 boards are pretty much guaranteed to work with 13th gen chips out of the box.
