CPU Fan not spinning

Go to solution Solved by ThousandBlade,

Fan is dead.

or accidently plugged the fan back into a case fan header

Hey guys, i just finished cleaning my PC and just pluged everything back together.

The CPU fan is now not spinning. There is a Continuous Beeep allert for the same.

The PC does boot up, went into Bios, Checked Gigabyte Smart fan menu, and it Confirms that CPU fan is at Zero RPM.

I changed bios from Manual speeds to full speed and it still does nothing.

After leaving bios, the pc does continue to boot up to the Windows Password screen, where i turn it off to avoid overheating.

CPU is Ryzen 7 2700x

Mobo is Gigabyte AUG x470

CPU fan is AMD's wraith Prism which came with CPU

I used air compressor air for cleaning, and held everything in place to avoid any spinning fans, since I've used the same method for cleaning many times before.

Also, did not unplug the CPU and Fan cables.

Could it be somethinf else?

well in this case

spin a with hand a bit, see if there's anything catching it

plug another fan into the cpu fan header see if that fan moves

or plug the cpu fan into another case fan header see if the fan moves

narrow down the problem

Ok so plug in my old Gigabyte Case fan on the top CPU Fan pin.

The fan spins, the beeping alerts are gone. PC boots up

Gonna try to Plug it the other like @Mayday793s Suggested

good

now we know there's nothing wrong with the motherboard header.

Double check you didnt plug the fan in backwards? Thats a simple thing that could possibly cause this.

There is a slotting done on this cable port and the socket. So it was not plugged the wrong way. It lines up in the channel, still fan not spinning. Case fan mounted same way does spin.

How may i test the CPU fan? I did spin it with hand, was my first action guessing it was just stuck

And second was to reset Bios, which i didnt know how to do, but since other temperory case fan does spin, imma guess ur right with your first guess. Fan is dead.

Now i need to understand why its dead and can it get repaired, if no, Should i go for Air cooled or watercooled Casefan xD

Also since we are on this topic, inwas getting a 2 second Beeping for last 4-5 days while the PC was running Forza horizan 4 (only game im playing rn)

Yesterday it started beeping when i was in Unity game engine learning stuff.

And then last night it started beeping only when the browser is open

Thats why i decided to do a cleaning of the PC today to see the difference. That was after restarting PC to check Fan speeds

there should be more fan headers on the motherboard for case fans.

plug the CPU cooler fan in one of those to check if it's really really dead.
it's very likely that's what happend

time to shop for a new cooler then.

Do i still need to plug a Dummy Fan into CPU port though?

no, case fan should still spin even if the computer is screaming at you.

Yup. The case fan is confirmed dead. *notes time of death 2 hours ago*

It didn't spin in Sys_Fan2 port either

Any idea how it would have died?

fan quality is really hit and miss on included cooler. they are not working with a lot of money to source that fan.

bearing wears out, which makes the tolerances bigger, which lets more dust in, which leads to even faster wear.

from what you told me, It's likely dying or already dead before you stared the cleaning.

I mean, 4 years is a good run for a fan. No king rules forever lol

I did use a 3HP industrial Compressor for the clearing. Maybe the dirt was hoolding the Fan together?

Not gonna lie, it was a Free fan than came with the CPU and it almost lived for 4.5 years

I always did want to Upgrade the CPU fan cuz performance was just enough but didn't keep it cool.

Shall i go for a dual fan Cooler master water cooler?

up to you, usually I'd find water coolers too expensive and problematic.

basically even some really cheap sigle tower cooler will work better than stock free cooler.

how much improvement are you looking to get?

for price to performance

I would recommend Thermalright coolers, they're the topdog of value these days.

If you just need something a little better. you can expect about 5c better vs stock with a Thermalright Assassin X 120
look for them at $20~25 area.

If you really want a big improvement. go with Thermalright Peerless Assassin

This year Summer has peaked 50°C in SE Asia.

Im doing full time solo game development so budget is tight.

Just need what ever gives good performance for cheap and wont die for next 2 years.

Will watch the video you linked above.

Seems cheaper in price than the Watercooler i was looking at, and looks like better performance.

Question is will it fit in my PC. Will have to take dimensions.

Also, Im thinking of Disassembling my CPU fan, but, last time i removed it, my CPU came off the board along with the CPU fan, stuck to the Heatsink, with a whole row of pins being Bent up.

Any suggestions in how to remove it safely without over heating the CPU, since fan not running?

trick would be when the CPU cooler is loose, don't pull up on it, twist it first

when the cooler is free from the CPU then pull away.

I will try to stress it to heat it up, and then pull it straight up, since there is no way of me knowing if the Pins are still inside the sock, or did they come out as soon as i Unlatch the Heatsink.

Cuz if i twist it, while its not sitting in properly, that will bend all pins.

Also, looking at getting a Deepcool AK620 since its performing better than the peerless assasin.

twist and lift "unstraight" to avoid efficient vacuum.

It's been a while since I used AMD, but the cpu is still clasped when you loosen the cooler, no ?

I'm willing to swim against the current.

Last time it just Stuck to it and came up as soon as loosened the cooler. By the time i realised, 1 Row or pins had bent. I had a post here for that as well

The pins definately should not come out as soon as you unlatch the heat sink.

it should at least stay in a correct position since the retention arm should still be holding it.

if you're really paranoid about it, hold down the cooler a bit to make sure the pins are still in socket and in a the correct position,

then twist it left and right, you should be able to get the cooler to seperate at the thermal paste
