My old GPU kicked the bucket so I just upgraded to a much more modern one. My CPU is a little behind it, so I'm planning on replacing that soon-ish.

Anyway, I installed the new GPU and its drivers via GeForce Experience, and my ping in games was normal except for the occasional lag spikes. The lag spikes were weird, so I looked online for support and one solution was to use DDU to do a clean install of the GPU drivers, so I did that, but now I'm getting consistant high ping/latency, not just the occasional spike.

I followed all the network troubleshooting tips I could find (my internet is completely fine in every other aspect) and made sure all my drivers were up to date (including the BIOS) but nothing has fixed this. I thought it might be CPU/GPU bottlenecking with the GPU being too advanced, but I was told by someone this isn't the case and it's just a network issue? I don't know, I'm getting mixed messages from the internet and now I'm lost.

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x

GPU: RTX 4070

Unless Nvidia has a latency or gaming "boost" tuning aspect in their driver software like AMD, there isn't anything a GPU does to affect internet speeds/ping.

Do you think my GPU upgrade and ping issues happening at the same time might just be a coincidence then?

And since my internet connection seems to fine everywhere except online games, do you know where I should be looking to fix this?

Thanks 🙂

Are you on WIFI or LAN?
motherboard, and PSU model please.

possibility1:
I have heard of things like this happing wayy in the old day. Poor quality motherboad and or degraded caps will result in weird behavior when using WIFI and High power components. But honestly those were problems close to 20 years ago, haven't heard anything like this recently.

possibility2:

Girlfriend Experience Running in the background doing something weird, using internet causing lag.

possibility3:
with the new GPU, the PSU has been pushed to the limit, starving mobo of power, causing problems.

or PSU will throw out crazy unstable power or emi when running at the limit. causing prolems.

#3 could be an issue but then you'd have more problems than high ping.  Dropped connections, huge lag spikes, etc.

I think it's just a coincidence.  You can power cycle your modem/router for sure, at least.

WIFI, and the connection has always been very strong.

wifi makes it more likely to be possibility3

If the GPU also has coil whine issues, then this is probably it.

try it with ethernet jack for a bit. see if that helps.
it will at least narrow it down to just WIFI interference or the whole network card.

I'd try moving around the wifi antenna a bit, see if that helps. Also the cable from wall to PSU could also cause emi issues. move that around a bit too.

could be, have a friend over than see if he lags on your network

could also be you neighbor just bought a shitty microwave and uses it all the time,

or he suddenly had an interest in signal jamming technology, building and testing shit in his garage XD

I power cycled my router and connected my PC to it with an ethernet cable, but that doesn't seem to have worked.

I'm beginning to think it's an issue with the connection to the game server itself and not a whole network issue, because my ping is good on a couple other games I just tried, and the results from a few online ping tests are also good.

It's just very strange that I got this issue right after upgrading and updating.

Well now we know it's not wifi.

If you're sure it's just that one game that's gotten higher ping then it's likely on the server side.

Companies do move servers around sometimes. When rito moved the League of Legends server, my ping nearly doubled overnight 😭
