Legally, rip dvd's and BluRay discs or buy digital movies from various sites like apple etc.

Less legally? Can't help you, but Google can.

In many regions, including the US and Canada, breaking the DRM on a DVD or BD (Or any other medium) to format shift your data still violates copyright law.  Ripping discs without DRM would not however, such as ripping music CDs, which have no DRM at all.

Not that I think there's anything ethically wrong with ripping your own paid for discs to watch them in a more convenient format.  I've also never heard of anyone getting sued for the act because 1) How the heck would they know if you we're not sharing the files? 2) It'd be a PR nightmare.  'Rights Holder Sues Guy Who Paid 40Bux For UHD Blu-Ray Because They Ripped It To  Watch It On Their iPad Too'.
