Need critique on potential build.

gir489

This is a quick build I put together: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/LsXR2m

Budget (including currency): $5000 USD

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: IDA 64 decomplication of games and malware(In a VM), Sony VEGAS 20 renders, 3DSM work I sometimes do for the Garry's Mod Idiot Box series. When not working, I'd like to use it for games.

Other details This is my current machine: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZsL9bK It does OK for the current workload, but really struggles with renders and working within IDA. It is also unbearably slow in the VM, especially with the malware payload deployed and the debugger running to capture what it's doing.

But I'm also thinking of just waiting for the i9 14 series and the 4090 Ti. Would it be a good idea to wait?

hi a few things keep your current nhd 15 you can email noctua and they will send you new mounting hardware. if your workload needs it then go nvidia but if it does not use cuda exelaration get the 7900xtx i would also keep your current ssd unless you are having issues with it. also do you really need 128 gigs of ram cus having 4 sticks can indraduse instability

Not to be a jerk, but that is the most fascinating way I've ever seen that spelled.  Like, if I was learning word roots in English and though about the difference between intra- and into- as well as when -duse is used vs. -duce, like I get where that line of thought comes from as far as what 'introduce' means and how it's used vs what 'intraduse' could mean.

I edit the shit out of my posts.  Refresh before you respond.

You can reuse your current cpu cooler with a Noctua LGA1700 mounting kit if you so choose.  With that said you want the locked version of that cpu or that board will suffer from thermal throttling as the 13 gen i9 is power hungry.

A lot of the video editing software I use (Vegas mostly, but avidemux as well) relies on NVENC to speed up the renders. Even if it didn't, there's no way in hell I'd ever go back to ATi. I bought a Radeon 9800XT back in the day and it died and ATi refused to warranty it because reasons. So because Half-Life 2 was coming out at the time, VALVe recommended the X850 and it would come with a copy of Half-Life 2 for free. The X850 died as well and AMD also refused to warranty it because reasons. I pulled an Nvidia card out of some Dell machine I found at the time and it worked great, so I switched over to a new Nvidia card around the time Bioshock came out, and I've been team green ever since. I'm not willing to save a few measly dollars in the hopes that ATi has somehow come around now. And for people who say well it's AMD now it's different, I still haven't forgiven them either for the Bulldozer debacle. I could probably go down to 64GBs of RAM.

I picked the KF because it doesn't have the Intel onboard graphics that I won't be using, but the F looks just as good, and I don't plan on overclocking it anyway. I think reusing the Noctura might be a good idea, but then the original tower won't be able to run, unless I stick a generic fan in there. I don't want it to become e-waste just yet. I'd like it to be useful as a 2nd machine if need be. A case is a case to me. Just a giant hunk of metal that sits underneath my desk that I never look at. I'll probably go with that. Thanks for the suggestions.

The 'F' version of the locked i9 has no integrated graphics. The locked i9 13900 comes with integrated graphics. btw that board doesn't allow for overclocking anyways .. you would need a Z790 board for that.

Would it be worth it to beef up the motherboard and cooling to get it to clock around 6 Ghrtz?

You would want an 18 phase board or better for that but tbh a lot of users are undervolting that cpu.

Here's an 19 phase board that just went on sale (promo code).

The NH-U12S is sub-optimal for any i9. If you are open to reusing parts from your existing build, keep the NH-D15 and get an LGA 1700 bracket from Noctua https://noctua.at/en/nm-i17xx-mp83-mounting-kit.

The 4000D is sub-optimal given the 358mm GPU. At least one front fan position would be unusable. Consider instead the 5000D or Meshify 2 XL.

Consider a PSU with native support for the 12VHPWR connector used by the GPU. Perhaps the https://pcpartpicker.com/product/HXjBD3/thermaltake-toughpower-gf3-tt-premium-1000-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-ps-tpd-1000fnfagu-4.

Given the rest of the build, consider a Samsung 990 or 980 Pro NVMe drive. I'd suggest 2TB.

A B760 motherboard will not allow full exploitation of the i9-13900KF CPU. Consider a Z790 motherboard or an i9-13900(F) CPU.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Thanks. I've changed up the parts to reflect the feedback in the thread. I think going with a beefy cooler might help the strain I'm going to be putting on the i9. Here's the updated list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/JT6DGL Let me know what you think.

Looks good.

I'm not a fan of the H170i, I believe it overpriced. But I do understand the allure of the pump block display. If you can live without that, the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 420 A-RGB is a decent AIO.

I only chose it because I recognized the brand Corsair and it had good reviews from people using the i9-13900 series. The last time I did water cooling, it was a major pain in the ass. You had to use this special additive to the water, and use distilled water, and then change out the water every month or so. I'm guessing these AIO blocks are sealed, so you don't need to do that? What's inside them?

AIO are sealed units and do have a limited lifetime. Generally at least 5 years. The usual liquid is deionized water.
