Is the 4090 "worth" another $450 CAD over the 4080?

SAT01

Hey everybody,

Firstly, I'm aware this is an entirely subjective question that nobody can answer for me, but the market for GPUs is quite frustrating at the moment, and some opinions might clarify my decision. It seems the received wisdom is that, even at MSRP, the 4080 is terrible value and one should instead opt for the 4090, which is the more compelling option for gaming at 4k. However, the 4090 costs ~$2100 in my country, which is simply too much for me. I'm not even totally comfortable spending $1600 on the 4080, but I'm making the system for my sibling and want them to have an awesome experience. I'm about to pull the trigger on the 4080, but some part of me thinks, if I'm already paying so much, why not spend a little more (this is ostensibly the reasoning anticipated by Nvidia).

If any owners of the 4080 or 4090 could leave their thoughts, it might point me in the right direction. Everyone is probably sick of talking about these cards by now, so I'll leave it at that.

Thanks!

The 4090 is the simple best GPU on the market, and a HUGE uplift over the previous gen.  Is it worth $2100?  As a gift?  How much do you love your sibling and how much do you normally spend on gifts to each other?

Personally, i wouldn't even buy a 4090 for my girlfriend, and she does some fairly awesome and nasty things at my request 🙂

That's how I feel about the 4090 and its "worth".

in terms of cost per frame it's the same as the 4080, which basically makes the 4090 the better buy. This is however intended by nvidia, just dont buy the 4080.

What might you recommend instead of the 4080? The 7900XT is looking appealing with the VRAM at the moment.

That's where I would go for a price to performance ratio, for a gift PC.  XTX if you really like your sibling maybe.

Really it's your call, we can't know your relationship nor how much money you have.  If you're comfortable spending over 3000 for a PC for your sibling, rock it.
