Depends on A) what type of raid and  b) if there's a reliable backup of  the video material.

For example, if you have a permanent ZFS storage solution and you would like to also store the video  on a raid 1 or even on a raid 0 for more perfomance while accessing for editing, go ahead.

On the other hand, i would not advice on using  raid 0 as only storage for video, even if it was just  temporary.

I’m currently working on setting up a home diy NAS. It will be temporarily storing videos before I transfer them to my computer for working on. It was recommended that I use raid. Should I and if so, what mode?

Why would you set up a NAS solely as an ingest station..? Just import the videos directly to your PC.

If you need storage for finished work, that makes a lot more sense.

More information about how you want to use this system would be more helpful.

It’s because I’m working for someone else who is constantly traveling and I was planning on building a data server for them so that my computer doesn’t always have to be on.

The important bit for you is to find out why you would want RAID:

• for performance?

• for redundancy/data resilience?

If the former, then you need to have enough similar sized disks -AND SPARES- (because the day you need to replace one, it might not be available}

If the later, you can do that, even with completely different disk sizes and types (for ex. with UNRAID, but there are other solutions around)

So they would upload data to the server for you to then edit?
