So about a year ago I built my first rig with an AMD phenom ii x4 965 BE and it has since served me well. But now, it feels as if it is being quite slow and especially since i need a lot of power to stream at the same time as gaming, I feel as if I am in need of an upgrade.

I have a budget of about £100 - maybe a little over and my motherboard socket is am3+ so I'm looking for specifically an AMD solution as I don't feel like tearing out my motherboard.

Any tips on which processor to go for?

Thanks

I have a Gigabyte 78LMT-S2P motherboard. Pretty low end but it gets the job done :)

Get the FX 8320.

There is not a suitable replacement that I would recommend putting on that board.

An 8320 would be the best bet unless he plays alot of MMOs etc. In that case the higher IPC of Phenoms would be better so a 1090T or 1100T would be a better replacement.

However, due to that boards limitations I would not put a 1090T or an 8320 on it.

-760G Chipset

-No VRM heatsink

-4+1 Power Phase design

So you mean I can't really upgrade without getting a new motherboard?

save a bit and get a 990fx and a 8320-8350 or switch to intel, no point trying to get a cpu with that mobo.

My Little Gaming Rig:

CPU: FX 8320 | MOBO: Gigabyte 970A-D3P | RAM: G.Skill Ares 2x4GB | GPU: Sapphire Dual-X R9 270X | Storage: Seagate SSHD 1TB | Case: Corsair 200R | PSU: CM 550W V-Series

Upgrades to come: CPU FAN: Corsair H100i | RAM: 2 more 4GB sticks | GPU: Another R9 270X running in crossfire | Storage: Samsung 120GB SSD | PSU: Corsair 800w

Is this because of potential heat problems or something else with the board? Also what kind of things would I need to look for in a new motherboard to accomodate the 8320?

-Lower IO performance

-VRM overheating causing throttling

-Overloading the VRMs

990FX chipset

6+2 digital or 8+2 analog power phase design or better

VRM heatsink that has some mass to it

For AMD stick to Asus or Gigabyte

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU:  AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor  ($144.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard:  Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P ATX AM3+ Motherboard  ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $234.98
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
(Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-05-09 07:55 EDT-0400)

You could get that, this motherboard has an 8+2 digital powerphase and good quality heatsinked VRM's, it will support the 8320 and allow for major overclocking if you feel the need...

(aftermarket CPU cooler REQUIRED for overclocking, even if you don't overclock i would recommand a 29$ CM hyper 212...the stock heatsink is very loud)

That's the motherboard i'm using and the CPU starts throttling down at 4.93ghz...not bad at all...i run 4.6ghz with 1.4v on it 24/7.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

@4.6ghz : 47-48c while playing heavy games like BF4 multiplayer, 55-58c while running prime95 or any other torture test...VRM's are hovering around 70 to 80c wich his fine for this motherboard, no throttling observed.

Note that i do have a gaming case that is properly ventilated to accomodate this CPU and GPU that i'm using.

You can't beat that board for the price as long as you don't plan on going SLI/CFX cause the PCie Slot #2 is only at 4x speed (like every 970 chipset board)

But it does feature SATA3, USB3 and all the other bells and whistle from the high-end 990FX board.
