Hey Guys,

I'm an audio engineering student who is planning on building a PC. I've been trying to decide between an i5 and an i7 processor, and i was just wondering whether or not the hyperthreading in the i7 processors would make that big of a difference in Pro Tools (or other DAWs). I feel as though the only difference would be under a really large load (a considerable amount of tracks as well as plugins) but I'm wasn't entirely sure... however I dont have a DSP card so all of the processing would be coming from the CPU.

Thanks for the help!

You have the right idea. The difference shows when you're working on more heavy projects.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

It depends on what kind of work you will be doing and how heavy your loads will be, like you said.

I know a couple people who have audio workstations and one of them knows how to build computers and such, and he always uses an i7, so there's that.

@quicklyplease_

If you plan on going into audio or video professionally go i7

Encoding is a CPU intensive task and you will definitely benefit from a hyper threaded processor such as an i7. It is true that larger files benefit much more from hyperthreading as the amount of time can be reduced considerably but it is important to note that an i7 offers scalability of operations. Hope it helps! :)
