Ok so I had an old PC and bought a few things to turn it into a nice home server (I am hardware savvy not software). If your wondering my PC turned server is an old AMD FX8350 with 32 Gig of A-Tech Memory and 17 TB of storage (1 TB for the boot drive and 16 for storage).

So on to my question, what do I get as an OS and programs to run it ?

What I would like to do with it is run a Media/Gaming server and be able to control it from my main PC (as in remotely).

Now I did watch a few of LTT's server video's and I'm guessing because I'm a noob to servers (I do build my own PC's) TrueNAS Core is the OS to DL and then I DL Plex Media to that and I should use Pulsway to remote into it...or do I use Win 10/11 and DL  everything to win?

How hard is TrueNAS to use for a beginner?

What do I do to use my server as a gaming server?

I also have Discord if someone would like to talk to me about / through the process.

Thanks,

Pod

If you're putting TrueNAS on, it won't be a gaming server.  You can add features to TrueNAS, but not a gaming server.

As for TrueNAS Setup, it's fairly easy.

You're going to want (At least) 2 HDDs, if not 3+.  That way you can run RAID Z1 for some redundancy.

This covers most of the setup.

Win 10/11 is an option, but it'll be way less functional as a File Server than TrueNAS.  But if you're okay with the server being slower (Windows has a lot more overhead) it'll work.  This would, however, let you use it as a game server, albeit a very slow one.  The 8350 won't be a great CPU for that.

FYI:  TrueNAS doesn't need 1TB.  I've got it running on a 128GB SSD and it's overkill AF for space.

Is win 11 Home ok for a plex server as well? (I might want to share the media with family) as a gaming server...remember I have 16 TB to play with and TY for the HDD info...1 TB SSD is all have for the OS atm...all my SATA slots are full on the board I have.

i dont recommend paying pulseway for this scale, just use ssh if you are using truenas or the webUI if you are a normal person. what does "gamming server" really mean? are you trying to run dedicated server software, or use it as a gamming pc remotely? i definitely do not recommend windows 11 for any server deployment, especially on hardware this old. use either windows server or depending on how your drives are configured truenas or debian 11. if you have a hardware raid controller use debian 11. if you dont have a raid controller or you arent comfortable setting up ZFS from command line, use truenas. truenas is pretty beginner friendly and i could figure it out with no experience in 20 mins. if you dont want to bother with either use windows server. the evaluation image will work fine, if if you have a non-eval image, it will work fine unactivated.
