RTX 3090 or 4070 Ti, which one should be better for my use?

kubikolos

Hello! I own RX 6900XT right now but I am thinking about changing my GPU to 3090 or 4070 Ti. I mean I'd like more VRAM but 4070 Ti is faster but it has less VRAM. I'm playing mostly on 1080p144 display. I'm thinking about 4080 even to achieve higher frames. On the other hand 4070 Ti + DLSS + Frame Generation should do the job in FPS games. Mostly on Ultra settings. What do you think? 7950X3D + 32 GB 6000 MHz.

Why?

How aren;t you getting 144fps on a 6900xt at 1080p?

I am but I want to change.

I mean that makes no sense really.

If you are getting the performance you want then why get a gpu without more vram or a card that performs basically on par with the 6900xt?

My recommendation is don't upgrade as there is no upgrade to be had here

Then get something really better, like a 4090, what you're doing is a super expensive sidegrade...

System : AMD R9 5900X / Gigabyte X570 AORUS PRO/ 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance 3600CL18 ASUS TUF Gaming AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX OC Edition GPU/ Phanteks P600S case /  Eisbaer 280mm AIO (with 2xArctic P14 fans) / 2TB Crucial T500  NVme + 2TB WD SN850 NVme + 4TB Toshiba X300 HDD drives/ Corsair RM850x PSU/  Alienware AW3420DW 34" 120Hz 3440x1440p monitor / Logitech G915TKL keyboard (wireless) / Logitech G PRO X Superlight mouse / Audeze Maxwell headphones

3090 is better only in raw performance at 4K and even than not in all case if game not hit 12 Gb VRAM it will be worse. Anyway in games that support DLSS and frame generation 3090 will be way behind 4070 Ti even it have way higher VRAM capacity is no matter anymore because you can use DLSS preformance that rendering game at 1080p and than upscale to 4K on top of that frame generation double your FPS.

the 6900xt would be best for your use.

Why spend over 800 USD to side grade and get the exact same performance. Frame gen will not improve the fluidity of game play, and AMD already has FSR 2.0 in terms of DLSS.

That is not simple as you think sure if you compared raw performance difference is not huge but than you start use DLSS and frame generation you will get over 100% performance increase. For old games that not support DLSS and frame generation sure not worth but for new upcoming AAA game that most will get DLSS and frame generation it will massive increase performance.

Frame gen does not work that way, if you want frame gen that bad, wait a bit, FSR 3.0 is already deep in development.

AMD has FSR 2.0

It double your real FPS. Lets say your GPU can rendering game at 60 FPS this mean with frame generation you will get 120 FPS.
In Hogwarts Legacy I have only ~70 FPS without frame generation but than turn it ON I get FPS increase ~140
And is unseful if your GPU can't rendering at least 30 FPS as minimum. For best frame generation experience you still need hit at least 60 FPS

No... no it does not.

That in no way is doubleing your "real" fps. It smooths animation sure, but it introduces input lag and creates artifacts.

doubling real fps would half input lag. like what dlss 2.0 does. or FSR 2.0

That even better than just double. 219-519% increase and that artefact happen due low FPS mostly and some bugs in early game that will be fixed anyway.
Frame generation still need bare minimum FPS to work properly 30 FPS as minium and 60 FPS for best experience.

Simply put, not today. Try again in a year.

You are completely missing WHY people want higher frame rate with something they are INTERACTING with. its for immediate I move, screen moves. game gets new information, it comes to my eyes sooner.
DLSS 3.0/frame gen DELAYS new information, and DELAYS your input.

THe exact issue you point out, artifacts due to "low fps" is the only situation where you are really looking to boost your fps.

Who cares about going from 300fps to 600fps (with input lag making it feel like 250fps)

Exagerated to make the point. you play a game at 50 fps with dlss 2.0 , dlss 3.0 to 70fps, but now the game feel input wise is 35 fps. thats a hard pass. Just stick with dlss 2.0/FSR 2.0

You right but you will never hit that FPS in any AAA game with max settings and RT ON. Even 4090 hard too hit 100+ FPS in most AAA game with max settings + RT ON that why need DLSS and frame generation too hit 120-160 FPS that is give best play experience.

OP is talking about a 4070ti/3090. not a 4090.
Also. R6 siege.

Dude, there are no games the 4090 struggles to hit 120fps with dlss 2.0.

the 7900xtx/4090 are the ONLY cards that are an upgrade for OP really. sure the 4080/3090ti/7900xt exist, but you are still talking about spending a grand for MARGINAL fps improvement. OP needs to wait for NEXT gen or a refresh with reasonable prices.

Spending a grand to go from 100 fps to 125fps is not something I would suggest to someone who is asking, the only people who do that already know without asking(I do not begrudge those, they fully know what they are doing with their hobby).
Spending 800-900 to go from 100fps to 110 fps (4070ti/3090) is an even worst suggestion.

OP is also only playing at 1080p, so DLSS/FSR means running at like 720p. at that point no GPU upgrade will boost their FPS.
