Video and Audio stuttering with RX7900 XT

Go to solution Solved by Kurz-Weber,

Oooooooooooooooooooohkaaay... I think, I could solve it!

I've searched through nearly all AMD Community posts, which could be related to my hardware setup, and found some posts.

So, apparently the combination of having a CPU with integrated graphics (looking at you AMD Ryzen 5 5600G) and the BIOS PCIe Gen + lane configuration, is error-prone.

My setup was:

  1. RX7900XT graphics card in PICE1-Slot
  2. BIOS PCIe Options:
    1. Lanes x16
    2. PCIE x16 Bus Interface: Auto

I changed the BIOS config to:

  1. Lanes: x8x8
  2. PCIE x16 Bus Interface: Gen4 / Auto (both works)

And guess what: Problems are gone! It seems like, that Ryzen 5 5600G can't handle Gen4 x16?.. 😞...

So, do you think, it's okay, or should I get another CPU? Any recommendations?

Hi, I update my current rig incrementally, which means, I buy some new hardware, or get some spare hardware from someone else and swap it with my running hardware.

Now since I bought a RX 7900 XT, every time I start watching Videos on YouTube or Crunchyroll, I get audio and video freezes "stuttering" / "cracklings".

If I play Star Wars Battlefront II, Back4Blood, Satisfactory, Age of Empires II,  Forts, Frost Punk, Civ VI or Remnant, I also get those freezes.

Those freezes are pretty annoying, because they also let cause audio-issues in Discord. The problem presents itself as follows: At random moments, I can't hear anyone in discord, while everyone hears me talking. This get resolved, by reconnecting to the channel.

All I want is to play happily games with friends in 1440p and maxed out graphics.. 😢

This was my running previous setup:

  • Windows 10 Pro (64-bit)
  • ASrock B550M Steel Legend (BIOS Version 2.50, latest)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600G (no overclocking)
  • G.Skill Trident Z RGB DIMM Kit 16GB, DDR4-3000, CL16-18-18-38 RAM (no XMP Profile)
  • XFX Radeon RX 480 GTR 8GB (stock)
  • Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB
  • 2 Crucial MX500 SSD each 1TB (Photography, other legacy-stuff, which I should review and delete)
  • 4TB Seagate IronWolf ST4000VN008, HDD (Backup and Stuff)
  • be quiet! Pure Power 12 M (850 W 80+ gold)
  • 2 DELL U2515H Displays with DisplayPort

New and current setup:

  • Windows 10 Pro (64-bit)
  • ASrock B550M Steel Legend (BIOS Version L2.62, latest beta)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600G (no overclocking)
  • G.Skill Trident Z RGB DIMM Kit 16GB, DDR4-3000, CL16-18-18-38 RAM (no XMP Profile)
  • Sapphire Radeon RX 7900 XT 20GB (stock)
  • Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB
  • 2 Crucial MX500 SSD each 1TB (Photography, other legacy-stuff, which I should review and delete)
  • 4TB Seagate IronWolf ST4000VN008, HDD (Backup and Stuff)
  • be quiet! Pure Power 12 M (850 W 80+ gold)
  • 2 DELL U2515H Displays with DisplayPort

What I have tried:

  • Take a look at display configuration: 1440p 60Hz
  • Disabling fTPM
  • Disabling any AMD Adrenalin Overlays
  • Clean Driver Installing with DDU and AMD Cleanup Utility
    • 22.12.1 (Problem is present)
    • 22.12.2 (Problem is present)
    • 23.1.1 (Problem is present)
    • 23.3.1 (Problem is still present, but a little less annoying)
  • Changed PSU with other 850W
  • Reviewed the GPU Cabling (I used two separate cables for power-delivery)
  • Updates BIOS Firmware to L2.62..
  • I have disabled Hardware-Acceleration in Firefox
    • Now, I can at least watch YouTube Videos, with crackling and a little less audio/video freezes/stutters.
  • I have disabled Hardware-Acceleration in Discord
    • A little less audio crackling and stutters

Does anyone have any idea? I feel very tired from trying...

Thanks in advance!

First, install the latest AMD chipset drivers (download from AMD not Asrock!).

Then, disable Multiplane Overlay MPO.

And then disable the Ultra Low Power State ULPS.

Enjoy.

Hey,

thanks for the immediate response! 🙂

Done. The latest revision number is 5.02.19.2221

Done. Restarted. No crackling, but Audio/Video freezing stays. Starting a game results in Audio/Video freezing/stuttering

Done. Restarted. Same behavior after disabling MPO

What I've seen or witness more often is, that after restarting my pc or generally starting, the monitors stay black. Only switching them off and on, results in active display.

But this only happens after the booting. While booting, I see the BIOS-Screen, and so on... could this issue also be related to this?

Do you use the latest monitor drivers?

So.. a small update:

- I did fresh install of windows 11. Issue persists.

- Then I installed windows 10. Issue still persists.

I even tried disabling MPO/ULPS.. Videos are still freezing, Discord-Problem still there.. oh well 😞

Hey,

I tried it. Issue persists.

Windows 10:

  • Screen 1 HDMI, standalone: YT-Video is playing, sound is still crackling and audio/video still freezing/stuttering. Starting a game like League of Legends, starts causing major crackling/freezing/stuttering
  • Screen 2 HDMI, standalone: YT-Video is playing, sound is still crackling and audio/video still freezing/stuttering. Starting a game like League of Legends, starts causing major crackling/freezing/stuttering
  • Both Screen 1 HDMI and 1 DP: YT-Video is playing, sound is still crackling and audio/video still freezing/stuttering. Starting a game like League of Legends, starts causing major crackling/freezing/stuttering.
  • Screen 1 or 2 DP, standalone: Same.

I wiped all Driver again with DDU and AMD CleanUp Utility. After that, I spin up YouTube and watched some videos. No issue at all.

After that, I've installed the driver completely new. The issue came back... BUT ... the longer I watch Videos, the less stuttering/freezing is happening. As long as I don't start any game, I have nearly no issues.. I tried this with 1 Screen alone, 2 Screens with all combinations of HDMI and DisplayPort

I've ordered new HDMI-Cables and DP-Cables, which should also exclude any problems with cabling..

Furthermore, I also think, that I'll stay at Windows 10 for a while..

Did you check with hwinfo the power consumption at idle or while watching videos? I remember these 7900 XT(X) cards to be plagued from the launch with horrible high idle power consumption and while watching youtube/videos/browsing in multi monitor setup. Has AMD fixed this issue with driver updates? High consumption doesn't translate to stutters, but that consumption at idle/watching videos is not normal, hence I expect other bad symptoms. It seems that these new AMD cards have a problem with multi monitor setups.

The first screenshot is "System is idle".

The second screenshot is "YouTube watching".

1440p Videos: Stuttering as hell.

1080p Videos: Even worse.

720p Videos: Stuttering is still there, but muuuuch less.

Unfortunately, I'm already using the latest driver 😞.. I'm waiting for the next release..

Just for clarification, is your GPU installed directly into the PCIe slot or is it through a riser/extension cable?

  • 1 year later...

Hello there,

I've had the same issue for quite a while, see screencap here.

Today i have performed a BIOS Upgrade of my AsRock B650M PG Riptide to the current version 2.10 and viola: problem gone so far.

I've also had an "AMD PSP 11.0 Device" Yellow exclamationmark in device manager before the bios update.

Did try the PCIe 8x8 and x16 Gen 4 settings without effect.

Also did DDU and different AMD driver versions before.

It was also interesting that the problem didn't persist always but always came back

Sometimes firefox was fine, edge had problem, sometimes Local video playback worked, sometimes not.

Thats one of the most random flakines i've had.
