Want to try to set up and use (some of the time) a virtual machine.

System specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H-WB ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
  • Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
  • Storage: Sandisk Extreme 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
  • Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
  •  Video  Card: Powe rColor Radeon HD 7970 3GB Video Card
  • Power Supply: SeaSonic G 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
  • Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Full (64-bit)

You can try Linux, maybe Ubuntu, FreeBSD is also a good option. XP, 2000, 98SE, etc are all Great options as well. You could try to get OSx to run in VM, but that is a risky manuver (risky as it is difficult to pull off). 

 

Also, just note you can not pass through your GPU to the guest OS. Thank Intel for that (leaving VT-d out of the k series until haswell).

You can run windows 7, you don't need to resort to xp. If you want you can run a linux distro like Ubuntu, it's very easy to install and virtual machines with linux work exactly like those with windows. It's free too, so you can try it and decide if you like it.
