Hey guys were upgrading a lot of computers on our shop floor to SSDs and they are running XP. Do you guys know any necessary updates that XP needs to best utilize SSDs? Any info would be much appreciated.

Upgrading to Windows 7. That would be a big update though.

Though there are a few other things you can do, most are not recommended for Windows XP. The guide below will be ALL you need for SSD Optimization on Windows XP.

if you are upgrading the boot drives, why don't you also upgrade the OS? Windows XP is not suitable anymore.

money and because the programs we use work fine on XP and they run on an internal network so security isn't really an issue. So no real need to upgrade if we don't need to you know?

windows xp does not know What SSDs are. And it will not pass the trim command to the drive.

Yes, this is completely true - Windows XP doesn't support trim. However, there are other optimizations that can be done with an SSD on Windows XP to give it a slight speed boost.

Although, there is a little caveat here as far as 'TRIM' on Win XP.. If you go with a Samsung 840 Series SSD (Pro or Evo) it comes with great software called Samsung Magician. This program will allow you to run TRIM manually.

Now, yes, it is true that to have the TRIM function available, it has to be supported by the OS itself. But, Samsung Magician will do it manually for you on XP, Vista or Win7. How good it will work, and how/what the process it uses, however - I do not know.

if everything works fine and security isn't an issue then all I have to say is fair enough.
