Hi, I was wondering if updating the bios could cause minor stuttering in games or if it would have any negative performance impact.

You're not going to notice a difference in gaming. And depending on the motherboard you could even brick the board.

Thanks, I was wondering because I have already updated my bios and I notice some minor stuttering in some games but I don't think it is because of the bios update.

The chance of fucking up a bios flash, and still have the board work fine is pretty low (don't ask how I know :P).

But the bios shouldn't have an performance impact. Updating the bios might have changed some settings, that causes your game to stutter.

How would I find out if it did change settings? And what settings would affect performance?

There is not really any way to know what the settings was before.

It is settings like ram speeds/timings and cpu clock (will only change if the cpu was overclocked/underclocked before the flash) that would affect performance.

What's with the stigma around flashing a new bios? I've done it many times, all without issue. Then again, bios flashback makes things really easy.

CPU: 5930K @ 4.5GHz | GPU: Zotac GTX 980Ti AMP! Extreme edition @ 1503MHz/7400MHz | RAM: 16GB Corsair Dom Plat @ 2667MHz CAS 13 | Motherboard: Asus X99 Sabertooth | Boot Drive: 400GB Intel 750 Series NVMe SSD | PSU: Corsair HX1000i | Monitor: Dell U2713HM 1440p monitor

However some bios updates will improve load balancing on multi-core CPUs...

Yes, motherboard manufacturers often add features, but they do rarely have performance drops.

Updating a bios has never been easier than now, with the build in updating tools on new motherboards.

Is there a way to tell my original ram times?

Try resetting everything in the nVidia control panel. If that doesn't work, install the latest beta drivers or roll back to a previous driver that you found stable. Lack of voltage can also cause issues when a gpu is under load and reset to stock clocks / under-volt and under-clock if all else fails. (:
