Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 cracked on its own after 1 hour of use...pop!

Turd_Fergusson

I did some research online and found that this issue may be a common failure on the new Neo G9 49" monitors. I say that because I already found a few posts on Reddit with images very similar to what happened to me today. I set the monitor up using the provided monitor stand and configured the settings how I liked. I then started doing work stuff, since it was the middle of the day. It kept making these weird popping noises which sounded like it was coming from the speakers. My TV does this too if you don't mute the speakers so I muted the speakers, which did not help. I thought maybe it was just a short in the speakers that I was going to look at later. After about an hour, I heard a really loud pop noise, kind of sounded like pulling off a suction cup really hard. I noticed the monitor looked like the image, big dark stripe down the left-middle of the screen with cracks in it. I have since shipped it back for a refund because I just received it today, it was brand new in the box. I am worried now if I should bother getting another one after this. What if it happens when I have had it for longer? I also was not super happy with how the HDR and LED dimming was working with Windows. It was weird how icons got darker and lighter when a bright window passed by them and the HDR was really lackluster. It was a strange viewing experience. It looked really unnatural next to my older Sceptre 34" 3440x1440 curved widescreen. I wanted to get the latest and greatest of the 49" to try it out. I was not super impressed when it did work though, but it could have been the settings weren't optimized for what I was doing. I had the brightness up decently high and I ended up turning off the adaptive brightness due to the weird effects it was having on icons and stuff where they would be all dim unless they were next to a brighter window. I am thinking it was due to the threshold of pixels that need to be white in order to get local dimming to kick in. It looked terrible though until I turned it off. In the end, I am not sure if I would buy it again. I would risk it again with a warranty if it was a great experience, while it lasted, or if the reports of this same issue were not dismissed by Samsung as not covered due to physical damage. I was very careful in moving it, only holding the middle area and NOT putting any torque on the monitor at all, especially nowhere near where it cracked. Has anyone else on the forum observed this issue before? I searched but did not find any posts about cracking screens here, only on Reddit.

Thanks!

Note on one of the images I had to blur the source code on the screen, so that is not what it looked like lol

Yup, a very well known issue on these, samsung will refuse warranty for it btw more then likely. They will fight tooth and nail to refuse to do anything for this. This is one reason why i pretty much wont ever buy a samsung monitor.

Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 don't have speaker, that volume control is for controlling device like headphone when you connect to the monitor headphone jack.

That is due to the local dimming issue, all local dimming monitor will have this issue.

The best way is set the monitor as SDR and set the local dimming to auto, in this setting you will not facing this issue and only turn on the HDR when required by using keyboard combination key of Start + Alt + B to toggle HDR on or off.

You mean Dynamic brightness? If this, it is grey out when you set Adaptive-Sync to on. The dynamic brightness should be off as it impact the screen brightness follow environment lighting and it may too sensitive and aggressive.

only holding the middle area

If you are holding the middle of the screen, this could be the reason it breaks. You should only hold the leg or the best two person holding the screen side without touching the screen.

That is what I have heard. Damn, there isn't really a competitive 49" monitor out there from anyone right now. I really was looking forward to flex on my co-workers with their older G9 and CRG9 49" Samsungs. My Z Fold 4 is still OK... for now. I think this turned me off on Samsung too though. I never had a new product fail like this before, especially one so expensive. Also, I noticed that this must have been sitting on a shelf somewhere for a while. The manufacturer date said it was from August of 2021.

Oh ok, that makes sense then. Well I was really careful lifting it and it was perfect when I started using it, no sign of any issues at all for an hour, so I doubt that how I was holding it was the issue, unless this thing was made out of wet toilet paper and had a delayed reaction... I think it must have been a defect. Especially considering the fact that I was not touching it at all when it happened, nor was it resting on anything or something like that.

I think you are lucky getting the earlier batch, which was Aug 2021, this unit must be in store very long time, I read comment and many facing issue in earlier batch. I wish Samsung will replace you a brand-new unit accordingly.

I buy in month of July 2022 and my unit was manufacturer in year 2022, I can't remember the exact month but confirm is year 2022.

yeah, after I had this issue I didn't think it might be something that was an early batch issue. I figured the issues I had with the HDR were settings and firmware related, so I didn't sweat it too much. I am considering getting the older G9 instead of the Neo because most of my use will probably be work related doing coding stuff and not really gaming. Do you think that makes sense to do that instead? I used to game a lot but I have been working so much lately that I just don't have time anymore. I have a mixmatch of 34" widescreen, 27" and a 24" for my 3 monitor setup now but figured I would try one 49" monitor to replace at least 2 of them. I am on the fence on what to do honestly.

older G9

Older G9 had more issue than Neo G9 when it get release, the Neo G9 at least it fixed the HDR issue with latest firmware, basically I don't have any issue after upgraded to latest firmware.

The G9 also doesn't look good in HDR for HDR movies or gaming due to lack of local dimming, I will not change to G9, the center screen breaking can happen in Neo G9, it also can happen in G9 as both is using basically same display and design with Neo G9 change to Mini-LED as backlight only.
