Upgrade 1700 to 3800X or just a new full build?

Hi,

I know that this question cannot really be answered by anyone but me, I just need to "think out loud" and maybe someone wants to add something.

I am currently using an AMD 1700 which I am using 90% of the time for office work and 10% of the time for gaming. I upgraded my GPU last year to a 2080 and even though my CPU is ancient by now, I never got the feeling of my PC being "too slow": I am running Elden Ring at 4k resolution without noticing problems, maybe my VR games (Valve Index) could run a little bit faster - it is still running at over 120FPS on most games.

I am using a lot of Microsoft products for work and I am actually liking Windows 11 on my Laptop more and more by the day so I'd like to upgrade on my PC too - my 1700 is not supported though. So I could go one of two routes:

* Just upgrading the CPU to a 3800X for around 200€

* Upgrading my entire PC (MB, CPU, RAM, SSD), which will cost me around 1500€ and recycling my old system to upgrade my NAS, which may or may not lead to further investments into larger drives (~1000-2000€)

I doubt the full upgrade will show in my day to day usage, my PC is already blazing fast even though its 6 years old. Maybe I can justify the upgrade with my VR games running smoother on a current gen CPU rather than the 3800X? Or is there a lot of power saving on idle that could be "worth it"?

200eur for 3800X seems like a lot considering that multiple shops I found sell the 5800X for 220eur-230eur and it's a much better CPU.

And Ryzen 7 5700X is almost as good as 5800X while being 180eur. I don't think you should be looking at 3800X if your motherboard supports 5000 series. Check if they added support with BIOS update and get 5700X instead in my opinion as it will run circles around 3800X especially at that price.

3000 series is the latest that my mb supports - and if I upgrade the mb, I'll upgrade everything.

wow thanks, I was sure the 3000 series was the latest supported on x370 boards - which seems true on the first look since the 4000 series is not supported. Now I only have to decide between the 5800x3d and the 5900x - probably going with the 5900x for the extra cores since I'm working a lot more than gaming on my PC and the FPS difference should be very minor in 4k.

4000 series wasn't very significant, just some APUs if i'm not mistaken

Don't get the 3000 series, especially at that price, it's garbage.

Step 1: Update bios to latest available

Step 2: Get a Ryzen 5600/5700x or 5800x3d

Step 3: Profit
