Seemingly random reboots..?

In my last thread, I was having issues installing Windows. A burn with Rufus of the ISO, and possibly resetting the BIOS, worked and I got it installed.

I was happy with it for about a day when it started the reboot gremlin again. Event viewer just says it was rebooted unexpectedly.

This is my first real build so I am unsure what to do exactly to troubleshoot... I was thinking, I could try running benchmarks (if it lets me log in) and watch temps etc.

I ran some sort of hardware test and it made it reboot (this is after the original unknown reboots)...

Should I use SMART fan controls in the BIOS? Or should I just leave them running at max speed? I bought memory that does 5200MHz, but base clock seems to be 4800... should I just leave off the overclock/xmp?

Here are the specs:

Ryzen 9 7900X

Noctua DH-15 cooler (both fans installed)

2x noctua 1200 Redux fans (one intake, one exhaust) plus one noctua 1500 Redux for back exhaust and 1x noctua 200mm front fan (intake)

Thermaltake Core v21(?) case

RAM is TForce Vulcan DDR5 5200, 2x32G, one in the slot furthest from the CPU and the other one a skipped slot away

2x Crucial P3 Plus 2TB (only one installed rn) M.2 nvme's

Mobo is MSI B650M-A Pro Wifi

What do you guys recommend for doing the benchmark? And what about monitoring the temps? Any other tips on what I should look for in the logs/event viewer?

edit: forgot to mention... after the most recent reboot, when i logged in, the screen was flickering, and would flash green as well...

For troubleshooting, probably best to leave XMP off for now.

  1. At what point in the hardware tests did it make it reboot?  CPU testing?  Memory Testing?  GPU testing?
  2. Have you tried reseating the GPU to ensure it's fully seated in the PCI-E slot?  (potential fix for the screen corruption issues)
  3. Did you install the latest BIOS from March 1 2023?

Ah forgot to mention, just using the onboard graphics, no dGPU.

edit: As far as where, let me turn everything off and re-run it. What software should I use to benchmark and for the monitoring?

re-edit: I haven't installed the latest bios because it was marked beta at the time (i think?) i'll double check that

You could use HWMONITOR | Softwares | CPUID for now.  That would just rule out crazy overheating.  Check my edited post to make sure you have the latest BIOS.

As an alternative, you could install Dragon Center (your motherboard manufacturer's software) and use it to update your PC.  I'm personally not a fan of it, but for your first build it might be helpful.  It can also monitor hardware temps etc.

Okay...

Motherboard (temps, C):

CPU Core is min 50 max 73

SYS is 34 min and max 35

MOS is 35 and 36

PCH is 32 and 33

I set all fans to max: (RPMs)

CPU: 1501 > 1542

PUMP: 1295 > 1325

SYS1: 1267 > 1297

SYS2: 1581 > 1623

SYS3: 873 > 894

CPU temps (C):

package: 44.8 > 75.4

CCD#0 33.4 > 75.6

CCD#1 32.1 > 65.0

Cores(MAX) 31.9 > 68.8

L3 Cache#0 30 > 40.1

L3 Cache#1 28 > 35

SoC 42 > 46.3

Memory: (for both)

Core 29.5 > 30.3

SSD?

Assembly 33.0 > 37.0

Radeon Graphics

GPU 36.0 > 40.0

SoC 41.0 > 46.0

(in hindsight, a screenshot might be better lmao)

Also, going ahead with the bios update - it's no longer marked beta anymore.

edit: if you could, lmk if there looks like any issues with the temps...

FYI I was running device manager, CPUID, and then I have 2 HyperV VMs installed that were likely running. I forgot to turn them off.

Update seems successful.

I might be crazy, but the desktop seems to run more smoothly now.

About those benchmarks... ?

You're probably not crazy.  Zen 4 is new, the AM5 socket is new, DDR5 RAM is new... there's a lot of things updates can resolve with new platforms, from RAM issues, to chipset issues, etc.

The temps all look normal to me.  Nothing stands out as crazy.  If it's all good, please mark the solution so everyone knows it's solved.
