13600k vs 7700x vs 5800x3d

Hi all,

The 13600k, 7700x and 5800x3d are all approximately the same price in the UK at £300-£320. Putting aside the difference in platform cost as I am not expecting to build for a few more months and hoping DDR5 will continue to come down, what do you think is the best gaming CPU out of the three options?

Given that I'm not looking to keep my tea warm with the heat coming of this computer and electricity is expensive, efficiency would also be interesting to consider.

Currently, the only other work load I have is some light CAD work, so the productivity side is not key.

Greatly appreciate any thoughts or advice

If you are into strategy games 5800X3D absolutely destroys due to its large cache. In games like Factorio, Civ or Paradox grand strategy games, that extra cache will nearly double your game speeds towards the end game with tons of things going on. These games aren't that much about FPS, but about ticks per second, and this is something that most CPUs bottleneck with. 5800X3D doesn't.

If you're not building for months, take into consideration the 7800x3d as well.

For now, I wouldn't build new with a 580x3d, but in the coming  months... definitely not.

Right but think he's looking in the $300 range (7900x3d is $600)  Those are still a bit pricey.  Plus I think the 7800x3d will be just as fast gaming if you compare the 7700x to the 7950x.  The 7950x3d is only 1 CCD cashed up, so it should be similar even though it has a bit more cache.

Wow, it‘s like you‘re reading my steam library. Paradox‘s EU4 and Civ6 are my two most played at the moment, so the extra cache seems the way to go. Thanks 🙂

The new Ryzen 7700 or 7900 are 65W CPUs which will provide similar performance to their X variants, whilst being around the same price and having far lower power requirements (and lower heat production). They even come with a reasonable stock cooler.

Unlike what I've done, you could wait for the new X3D chips to drop around the beginning of next month and see how they compare, but I expect they will probably be power hungry and hot.

I know. Reason why i am so hyped about is that i also mostly play such games.

What many channels testing these chips miss is that they always just test the same kind of games where CPU basically only exists to feed frames to the GPU, while ignoring the games where the CPU is actually the main star.

Well, this video goes further than that, and i love it for it.

Given the $450 price point for the 7800x3D, it would just be a bit too much for me unfortunately. Hopefully the new releases will only serve to bring down the price of older CPUsfurther?

Would you still suggest the previous gen x3d over the 7700 or 13600K?

Honestly, for your game library yes.  It's priced well, and you can build an AM4 system for cheaper since motherboards and DDR4 are cheaper.  Get some inexpensive SSDs and a decent GPU.  Done.

Most of our recommendations are in general, but if we know exactly what you're playing it helps.  Spec out a 5800x3d system vs a 7700x system if you need further convincing.

Edit:  I'm also counting on Micrcoenter having great deals on the 7800x3d when it comes out, they got my back 🙂

How many motherboards support these already?

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂

Gaming performance is fairly close between the CPU. Actual numbers depend a great deal on memory speed & timings, but mostly gaming resolution & GPU.

When all is said and done any of these CPU is going to give you an excellent gaming experience with any given GPU. As I've read in more than one review, the difference between 278 fps and 265 fps is not noticeable.

Given the volatility of CPU prices, wait until you are ready to purchase the system. Then price out systems with each CPU choice, (pcpartpicker makes this very easy), and choose the most appealing, i.e. the best value.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

I believe most of them do and if they don't out of the box just get a Motherboard with a BIOS Flashback option so that you don't need a older CPU to update just the USB Stick. I know a lot of Gigabyte and ASUS boards have this ability, it's usually on the I/O back plate of the board, just turn on the system and plug in the USB to the correct USB slot and press the button or go through the BIOS but be sure to read the boards manual first.
