Budget (including currency): 100eur

Country: Germany

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mafia definitive edition, Hitman 3, Far Cry 5

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Hi,

I want to ask if it is worth my time to upgrade the CPU in my current machine.

I currently have an i3-6098P, a 1050Ti and 16gb ddr4.

I have seen some second hand 6th gen i7 processors available around 80 euros, alternatively a new one is around 100 euros.

I would like to get better results when playing games and I think that by upgrading to the i7 6th gen processor I should see some improvements and it should be compatible with my current motherbaord.

What do you think?  Is it worthwhile investing another 100 euros or should I wait and get a new machine in the future?

Many thanks!

In 2023, I wouldn't recommend any drop in replacement other than an AM4 system. The generational CPU upgrade from Ryzen 3000/Intel 11th to Ryzen 5000/Intel 12th to Ryzen 7000/Intel 13th were all massive. The CPU market has been very competitive and you'd get a lot more value/performance out of going to either a 12th/13th gen Intel using DDR4 (while using your current memory kit) or Ryzen 5000 (which uses DDR4 as well) than doing a drop in CPU on Intel 6th/7th gen.

If OP waits a month, the 7800x3D should force a lot of decent Ryzen 5000 platforms on the aftermarket.

Around 80 euros is a bit pricey, for how old the system is I wouldn't jump for anything over 60 to be honest. The bump in CPU performance would be noticable, I know that the 6098P has fairly low clock speeds as well as no hyper threading so you would stand to gain some performance since you are playing some fairly CPU demanding games

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

LOL @ your signature. I've built most my mitx systems in that case since ~2015, I have ilterally 3 empty ones in my office too.

Hi all, thanks for the helpful comments!  So I think I will keep an eye out if I can pick an i7 sixth gen up for around 60 euros otherwise I will wait and look to invest in a new motherboard and chip like the Ryzen 5 series.  Much appreciated!
