Hi,

Trying to use 3 RAM modules; 2 ADATA DDR3 4GX16 4GB 1600 in slots 1&2 ( same color on Gigabyte GA-H87-D3H mother board) and 1 Kingston KVR16N11/8 8GB 1600 in slot 3.

Hardware check shows 16GB total but PC automatically and randomly restarts itself every few hours, which never happens when I use only the 2 4GB modules.

Wrong placement? Wrong modules? Faulty modules?

Thanx.

UPDATE:

After 48 hours no crashes and about the same number of open applications before a low memory warning with the one 8GB compared to the two 4GB, so it's not faulty.

Again, the two 4GB on their own never crashed either so... any thoughts?

Thinking of just getting another similar 8GB one and using only these two, 16GB total should be sufficient for my needs.

try using the kingston module on its own for a day or two, if the restarts persist, youve got a faulty module on your hands

gaming system: Intel core I9 12900ks / biostar Z690A valkyrie / 4x8gb corsair Vengeance @3333Mhz ram / RX 7900XTX pulse gpu / Thermalright peerless assassin 140 /Coolermaster Qube 500 case / Be Quiet Dark Power Pro 12 1500w power supply

laptop: Dell xps 9510, 3.5k OLED, i7 11800h, rtx 3050 ti, 2x16gb DDR4 @ 3200Mhz, 1TB main drive, 2TB add in ssd

or run 7-zip's benchmark on a setting that'll fill the ram. from my experience 7-zip is pretty good at crashing the moment something is iffy with ram stability.

Have you tried putting the two ADATA sticks into slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4? leaving the Kingston out of the system?  At least that way you would be able to take advantage of the double-data-rate (DDR) of the memory.  I would try that for a couple of days with just those two sticks and see how it goes.  If it all works fine with just that 8 in it for a couple of days only then would I try with putting the Kingston into either of the empty slots and then see how it goes.

But I would do the 2 identical sticks first in slots 1 and 3 "or" slots 2 and 4 to try and take advantage of the DDR function of the ram and see how it goes before putting in the oddball stick of ram.

Good Luck, let us know how it goes.

tbh its not an official usecase, but ive never heard of memory size mismatching causing crashes, nevertheless, your suggestion is worth a try
