Hi all

It’s finally time to spend money and move my 8600K off to a secondary system. Based in Australia and have $800 set aside for this but not on a strict budget.

Intel seems to be calling me, but I’m willing to consider AMD (and wait for 7800X3D if it’s killer value), however the motherboard offerings on AM5 seem limited and I’m not looking to spend a bunch on a B series board (could be convinced with a compelling argument).

All the requisite information below.

1. Budget & Location

Flexible AUD$800. Obviously bang for buck is king so willing to stretch. Australia

2. Aim

  • Primary: Gaming

    • Warzone 2 / DMZ / COD;

    • Diablo 4;

    • factorio and all manner of that style of game; and

    • cyberpunk I guess.

  • Secondary / non critical:

    • light 3D printing design; and

    • light video editing (not for production, just personal projects).

3. Monitors

  • 2 x 1440p IPS. Both 144hz and above.

4. Peripherals

  • Not necessary.

5. Why are you upgrading?

  • To spend money of course!

  • My current system is unbalanced

  • I’m planning to use the replaced parts to put together a somewhat portable rig (think NR200) with an old GTX980 that’s collecting dust.

6. Current system

  • CPU: I5 8600K (@ 4.8ghz)

  • MOBO: ROG Strix Z370-G Gaming

  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB CL16 (2 stick set) CMW32GX4M2E3200C16 [Intending to move to new build]

  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB CL (2 stick set) CMW16GX4M2C3000C15

  • GPU: EVGA FTW3 Ultra Gaming RTX 3080 12GB [Intending to move to new build]

  • PSU: Corsair HX850 Platinum 850W [Intending to move to new build]

  • AIO: Corsair H115i Capellix

  • Case: Corsair Carbide Air 540

7. Preferences

  • Intel, 13th gen (raptor lake)

  • Motherboard:

    • mATX (or mini-ITX if necessary). ATX would need to be a compelling option for it to beat out mATX, but isn’t completely off the table;

    • Integrated IO shield;

    • DDR4 - would prefer not to jump into DDR5 at this time, plus I can reuse 2 of my current 4 sticks;

    • M.2 - at least 1 - obvious more is better;

    • Network - 1GB is fine, anything more is a bonus that will go unused for some time yet;

    • Wifi - not necessary but a nice to have, willing to pay a small premium for a model with it over a model without it; and

    • Error / diagnostic led / segmented display but those seem to be reserved for only the most outrageous options.

  • RAM:

    •  refer above (existing DDR4 preferred).

    • If it must be DDR5 then at least 32GB

8. Currently considering

  • CPU: i5-13600K

  • MOBO: Gigabyte Z690M Aorus Elite AX DDR4

  • RAM: Refer above

Craft Computing did a recent video you may find interesting:

Bundles available, needs suitable cooler, not that expensive nor hard to find on that platform. (hint: find the official Snowman shop)

Sure, it's not the latest overhyped platform, but due to that very affordable, even for you lot Down Under 😉

Thanks- I’ll check it out

edit: very interesting indeed but I’ve had some trying experiences with AliExpress so I’ll be steering clear
