NAS recommendation for off-site backup

Cris.py

I am in need of backup system. My idea was to set up a NAS at my parents house.

What would you recommend for automatic backups of pictures, documents etc from 2 PCs and a mobile phone? I want it to be automatic and backup changes etc, but also assure that files are protected in case of a virus attack etc. I have been using Drive for backup so far, but got screwed twice (1. encryption virus, 2. disk failure) and in both cases, Google decided to remove the backup files the second they weren't accesible anymore. This is the use case I want to aviod.

Any recommendations are wellcome.

Remember, RAID is not a backup. Having the secondary NAS off-site is good, offline removable storage of the most important stuff is even better.

If you don't want to build your own file server PC with an OS like TrueNAS or Unraid, then a prebuilt NAS from a company like Synology is a viable option. They cost more than going full DIY, but they're a snap to manage.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Truenas is the best for this as you can use ZFS snapshots which are randsomeware proof (assuming the system is set up correctly, and the virus can’t get into the webUI and delete the snapshots), but this is a bit more complex then just using google drive…

If you have 2 truenas boxes you can also use ZFS replication, which is an automatic way to transfer snapshots to the backup server; it’s super slick.

This is exactly why I'm setting it at my parents house (should specify I don't live there lol) so it works as off-site backup for my PC. How hard is it to setup TrueNAS? I have an older PC I don't use anymore I could potentially make into storage server.

Is there maybe a way for a hybrid setup and have snapshots in cloud or similar? I don't have financials for 2 NAS atm lol.

You can’t store ZFS snapshots on anything except ZFS. But why not just keep the NAS at your place and just backup the critical data to the cloud?
