Budget (including currency): 1600£

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Howgards legacy, Dark Souls III, Cosmeteer, Civilization VI, Factorio

Other details

New build as I only have a MacBook until now.

My question is, would this build be completely overkill for gaming at 1440p-144Hz, medium-high video settings? I'll admit I don't play much AAA games so that may be overkill. I'm ready to pay the price for futureproofing the build, although maybe I should pay less and upgrade to this build for cheaper in the future (I'll admit to being a total noob when it comes to PC building).

Urrrggghh really bad build

3050 GPU ??? Ridiculous, HWL will run like crap

16GB slow DDR5 ??? Shocking

550W PSU ??? Unacceptable

You can get way better (6800XT is like x2.5 faster than a 3050) :

So.....

  1. 1x Stick of RAM will slow your CPU down, it is recommended to run a pair of the same modules
  2. The RTX 3050 is ok but you won't be playing at 1440p much in AAA titles, at least not at frame rates your monitor would benefit from
  3. 550W is barely making it, probably will cause stability issues. You want a high quality unit, 750W or higher (depends on the choice of GPU)

The system overall is nice, you get a pretty good case, decent motherboard but they cheap out on the memory config same as DELL, which leads to issues, you calling the support team and then they charge you extra for a second module to fix the problem.

The graphics card is the weakest link here. It will perform quite well on older games but don't expect high settings if you want a smooth experience. Of course if you only play older games or mostly strategy based ones than that card will be fine. For a new PC I would not recommend, anything less than a 3060/3070/4070 tbh.

Given the price of the system, you might be better off building one yourself. If money is tight right now, either save up or get some used parts or a used but working system and upgrade it. Because of the fairly weak GPU and the underperforming PSU, you will spend another 500 pounds or more to get where you want it to be.

Not a fan of this build. It does have some decent parts but others are not appropriate.

The CPU is designed for dual channel memory operation, (two or four module kits). A single module has at least a 5% performance penalty.

The GPU is entry level for 1080 at best. For the performance you want an RTX 3060 Ti or RX 6700XT are good starting points.

There should be no need for the Arctic thermal compound. New CPU coolers come with a pre-applied patch or small tube of compound.

There are less expensive motherboards that would be reasonable choices.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
