PC freeze when moving files

Go to solution Solved by Flynner1990,

After some trial and error, I believe the SATA controller was over heating and causing some kind of error. I've zipped tied some 40mm fans to blow air over my board and SATA controller.

Have the controller set to raid 0 again. So far no issues with transfering files over 100 GB in size.

Thanks Radium_Angel for the suggestion it got me to think about the controller I have having a cooling fan on it and how mine does not.

I'll mark this as fixed unless it fails again.

i5-3570k cpu

P8Z77-V Pro Motherboard

16 GB ddr3 Corsair Vengeance Ram

EVGA 1080 gpu

Ultra X4 850 watt power supply

four of "Kingston 480 GB sddnow 300 V" which are in raid 0

Windows 10 x64

Windows was up to date

Bios is up to date

SATA controller is up to date

As the title states whenever I move files the computer freezes and had no recovery from the freeze. A hard shutdown is needed to reboot. The issues seems to be only when moving large-ish files (about 1gb and larger). When moving a file, downloading, or copying the some thing happens. The cpu usage is normal at ~50% and disk is at ~20%. Then after some time the cpu usage drops to ~5% and the disk jumps to 100%. At this point all programs freeze and nothing can be used.

Oddly I could still play games with no issues. Elden Ring, Heavily modded Skyrim, monster Hunter world. Also no issues when 3d Modeling in Fusion 360 or Inventor.

Things I have tried:

Fresh install of windows.

Changing the raid configuration to raid 1 and raid 5 with a fresh install of windows.

Just installing windows on every sdd without raid.

Testing all sdd's on a laptop all reading above 97% health. Also can move files from laptop to sdds with no issues.

I am running out of ideas to fix my PC. I have an extra cpu of the same type I'm going to try. Also I have some generic DDR3 RAM I can try.

I think my SATA controller maybe dead but I have no idea how to test that.

If anyone hads an idea any help would be great.

Cheers

Buy a cheap PCIe SSD controller, plug drives into that (you may have to re-install Windows...depending on if the card supports booting or not) and re-test
