PC powering off after upgrade

Have you double checked all your connections/cables and made sure everything is properly fastened/inserted/seated?

Hey all,

I've been having a frustrating issue with my PC ever since I upgraded it a few weeks ago. Basically, when playing certain games, my PC will lose power (as if someone flicked the PSU switch at the back - but I'll touch on the PSU subject in just a second).

Current specs are as follows:

  • i7 13700k
  • MSI Z790 Edge Wifi
  • AMD Sapphire Radeon 6900xt SE Nitro+
  • 32GB Corsair Vengeance 5200MHz DDR5
  • Corsair RM1000x

My system before the upgrade was as follows:

  • Threadripper 1920X
  • MSI X399 Gaming Pro Carbon
  • AMD Sapphire Radeon 6900xt SE Nitro+
  • 32GB Corsair Vengance 3000MHz DDR4
  • Corsair AXi860

In the previous incarnation, my PC was rock solid - no crashes or power loss in any of the games I play (Notably Red Dead Online, Anno 1800, F1 22, lately Company of Heroes 3).

When I upgraded, I originally kept my AXi860 - however the PC was frequently powering off when under load. So, I bought the Corsair RM1000x and swapped it out. That solved the power loss issues in Anno 1800, Red Dead Online and F1 22.

However, I've just started playing Company of Heroes 3 and the issue's started happening again. I'm genuinely out of ideas as to what could be happening - could someone help point me in the right direction, please?

Which CPU cooler?

When switching the PSU, did you replace all the cables?

Ah, sorry - I totally forgot to mention the cooler! I've got a Noctua NH-U12s.

I did replace all the cables - I actually bought a set of CableMod replacement cables for the PSU. No daisy chains either, the 6900xt has two 8pins and a 6pin all individually run from the PSU.

@BiG StroOnZMy CPU seems alright - I run it (and everything else) at stock and it seems to be boosting normally. GPU runs very hot, but looking online the temps seem in line for a 6900XT?

@BiG StroOnZ I haven't, actually - I'll give that a go over the weekend. Didn't consider doing that.

Worth me reseating the CPU, too?

What are your temps while you're gaming? I'm not sure if a U12S is enough to cool a 13700k.

Thought the same initially, but it seems ok, by Noctua's standards:

@Otellino definitely double-check you connections, like @BiG StroOnZ suggested. If the old unit is still assembled (for the most part), you could test the new PSU in it as well (if the connections are confirmed good).

I would reseat everything: GPU, memory, PSU cables, CPU. If it connects I would try reseating it. Sounds like something is tripping. Also, if you still have it, worth trying out your new system with your old PSU. To rule out PSU issues.

Yeah his temps looks pretty good. Sounds like some sort of protection is being tripped though or there's a short.

I agree with testing the new PSU on the old system too.
