Probably not as far as I know. Companies like HP get oem versions of windows which, as far as I know, are locked to the computer they are installed on.

Microsoft has no problem resetting OEM copies for you. You just have to sit through a 20 minute phone call with some Indian woman.

You'll need the product key for Win7 and a Win7 disk to install normally (you an download non-cracked copies and burn them to a DVD or put on a USB drive). You can't just transfer the hard drive, that doesn't usually work. Every Dell computer I owned had a sticker that had the Genuine Windows Copy sticker on it with the product key, I'm assuming HP does that too so that isn't hard to find unless the sticker wore off.

That's why I said you can find non-cracked versions online (meaning not illegal) and download that ISO then burn it to a disk or set it up to install of a USB drive. All you have to do is install it like normal and use the product key on your HP computer, but you might have problems activating it in which case you just have to call Microsoft and they'll do it for you.

What you can do:

- reinstall on same laptop

- reinstall on new hdd

- add ram without reinstalling

What you can't do (or requires phone call to MS):

- use same product key on another hardware. Win7 and later have OEMs that are bound to mobo if they are bought together with computer. If you buy OEM key separetly you can reuse it with another mobo.

- pretty much that
