Hello, new here, i am looking for peoples opinions on cpu upgrade based on whats out there atm and whats coming this year, currently i got a FX-8120 on a Sabertooth 990FX, but now it starting to struggle a bit with what im throwing at it, which is 3d rendering, Unreal 4 Engine etc etc, i got one EVGA GTX-770 W/ACX, was looking to upgrade to the Intel's Devils Canyon on a Sabertooth Z97 Mk1, was also looking at Haswell-E but i really dont think i could afford that with a X99 motherboard and DDR4, would be enough to make the modest person homeless, so opinions anyone??

Devil's Canyon isn't going to be much better than the current line of Haswell's, the only real difference is the improved thermal material under the IHS but what I would recommend if you have the money is an X79 motherboard and a Core i7-4930K if you need the threads for your rendering otherwise look into the quad core Core i7-4770K with a nice Z87 motherboard.

Its that new thermal interface that tempts me to the new over the current, and i just done some calculations, i deffo cant afford a Intel-E, but im guessing that the Haswell current and new would be a advantage over the FX8120

I don't think the 4770K is worth it over a 8120 for rendering. Have you tried overclocking your 8120?

The Intel should be a major improvement over the 8120 in rendering, if not then I don't know what to recommend but most people who do rendering work either for fun or for work go with Intel. That says a lot to me mate

So long as you have a good cooling solution the current Core i7-4770K will be fine mate but go easy with the OC'ing because they do get a little warm

The H105 has made the H100i kinda irrelevant

If your case can't fit the H105 go with the Cooler Master Siedon 240M

what cooler do you use?

in terms of DC the new terms form the upcoming CPU's (K-Series) will be 4790K, and 4690K

I would say get a Z97 mobo and get a current Haswell CPU because prices will no doubt drop once DC drops

Xigmatech Ageir cooler, and i got a CM Stormtrooper, so should fit, might have to get a measuring tape in there and double check closer to buying time

Don't get the H100i for the Corsair Link, it's useless. So comparing the performance of the H105 to the H100i the H105 wins. I would recommend it over the H100i. That said, it's hard to justify an AIO 240mm with competition like the Dark Rock Pro 3 and NH-D14 and NH-D15.

Yeah ive been reading that lately, thought the link would be more useful rather than have a actual fan controller, but that said the BitFenix Recon seems to be quite good, and yes but the dark rock pro 3, and both Noctuas......THE SIZE....they are like godzillas lool

i would sell the fx you have and get an fx-8320 instead that way you dont need a new mobo, get an hyper 212 cpu cooler (29$) and overclock the heck out of it... at 4.6 ghz those are BEAST for rendering...almost as good as i7-4770 for rendering

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

you have no idea what you're talking about, if he can get like 75$ for his FX-8120 and get an FX-8320 for like 145$ it would be a 70$ upgrade that would totaly be worth it.

70$? Thats not worth it

FX-8350-74.jpg

I must admit i would have thought it would make a bigger difference, then it means nothing is really worth it for better rendering performance, OP you already have a powerfull 8 core CPU

all you can do to improve performance is free and it's called OVERCLOCKING...

Thats why I've said in #5 a 4770k isn't worth it. He doesnt have his cpu currently overclocked, not expecting him to oc his 4770k immediately either.

and even with an overclocked 4770k...4 core with hyperthreading is not as good as 8 logical cores in most rendering applications anyway, the i7 does scores a little better

due to a much better IPC in most applications but for rendering soft the difference between i7 and 8 core FX is almost cut in half making them about 15% appart at most...

there's no way that would justify a new motherboard and a 300$ CPU...no way.
