Worse preformance than expected!

Go to solution Solved by venomtail,

First, is your game on your HDD?

A ton of my lackluster performance was due to many games being on a HDD, especially textures and assets. I'd notice a slow down when an asset was loaded in, now that they're borderline streamed in, storage reads are important. Don't think this is a direct drive (or whatever that fancy name is) game so SSD speeds aren't as vital but will definitely play a part.

Second, all drivers up to date? A friend a few months ago played one AAA release and after updating his 3+ year old drivers got like double the fps in the same game, same everything.

Hello everyone, this is my first post here so bear with me! 😄

I recently downloaded Hogwarts Legacy, but the performance was horrible, topping ~20 fps and sometimes going as low as single digits in new areas. This was also with medium graphic settings and no ray tracing. Hogwarts is also not the only game I have been experiencing lower performance than expected (Though this case was especially bad), VR had a surprisingly low performance as well (Not too bad though). So, my question is then, is my computer in need of an upgrade or is there perhaps something spooky going on?

My setup is listed as follows:

  • Motherboard: MSI B550-a pro (Configured to run 3200MHz memory)
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (Overclocked to ~4GHz)
  • GPU: GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8GB (GIGABYTE)
  • Memory: Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO 16GB (2x8) 3200MHz
  • Storage C: KINGSTON SA2000M8500G (500GB)
  • Storage D: SEAGATE BarraCuda 2TB (st2000dm008-2fr102)
  • PSU: Corsair CX650M (650W)

The D: storage is something I think may have something to do with the poor performance. This is because Steam and all of my games are located on that drive, and it's not the fasted drive you can have.

While I was writing this I also tested Hogwarts Legacy on my laptop, which did not experience any lag what so ever (admitley, the laptop is better than my PC, it's quite sad I know). My laptop is a Omen 15 with the following specs:

  • Motherboard: HP 88D1
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600H (no overclocking)
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU
  • Memory: SK Hynix HMA81GS6DJR8N-XN (16GB 3200MHz)
  • Storage C: WDC PC SN730 SDBPNTY-1T00-1006 (1TB)
  • PSU: Unknown

Does any PC guru have an idea of what might be the problem or the best way forward?

Thank you in advance!

(EDIT: I forgot to mention that I run 1920x1080p on my PC)

ANSWER: It seems that having the game on the HDD is not very recommended. I am going to invest into another M.2 🙂 Thank you everyone for the very quick responses!

You neglect to mention what resolution you're playing at.

A 3600 and a 2070 Super just about exactly hits the recommended system specs for Hogwarts Legacy, and I've seen plenty of video of people playing at 60+ fps at 1080p with similar hardware configurations.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

What are your temps like? I take that they are okay (since you OC'd your CPU) but still

I will find your Laptop thread and I will recommend an ITX build instead

Oop, I edited the answer to include that. But I run on 1920x1080! 🙂

Check the health of your D drive, it may be failing.

I ran chkdsk D: /f and it seemed to have some complaints which it "fixed". It did not however change the lag however. I will try and run the game on my C drive!

I am currently in the process of moving the game to my C drive to see if that will help. I have a suspicion it is the case (since it works very well on my laptop).

My drivers are all up to date as well.
