I wanted to overclock my cpu but accidentally messed with my gpu overclocking and now my pc won’t give me any visual output.

My friend gave me this pc about two years ago and when I gave it to me the gpu was already overclocked. It actually works really well for only being a Radeon rx580 but the cpu was seriously bottlenecking it (ryzen 3 1200) as well as the ram which is only 8gb.

I decided to overclock the cpu until I upgrade the system to am5 later but I didn’t realize that Mai afterburner is actually for GPUs and not CPUs (I am very retarded) anyway I was increasing the load without any crashes slowly until eventually I decided it was fine and went to run war thunder (yeah i was too lazy to install a benchmark as well). Anyway it crashed and when I tried to reboot it crashed again. Now when I try to boot it the pc turns on and the fans spin up and everything but there is no visual output. I tried taking out the gpu to run on integrated graphics but that isn’t getting anything either. Is it so over for me boys? Did I Brick the pc?

Have you cleared CMOS?? Try removing the CMOS battery and shorting the jumper pins if you know where they are.

The Ryzen 3 1200 doesn't have integrated graphics, so it makes sense that didn't work.

There is an option in MSI Afterburner that enables overclock when you first boot. You might have that enabled which is causing instability.

Try resetting CMOS and booting into Safe Mode. If you can boot into Safe Mode you can disable the overclock most likely.

By removing the battery, you reset CMOS.

I would do what @BiG StroOnZsays to get into Safe Mode as you're going to have to disable the overclock in Afterburner. This is one of the reasons why when OCing, to not save the profile as the application will keep loading the failed OC when Windows reboots.

Ok so I’ve removed the cmos and jumped the pins a few times but unfortunately im still not getting input. As far as im aware I didn’t even save the overclock I just increased values and hit “apply”. Also a debug light came on on my motherboard for VGA. ono

Does the RX 580 have a BIOS toggle switch? It might be possible you bricked the VBIOS and switching it might recover it. Then you can reflash that bricked BIOS once you get into Windows.

If you don't have a BIOS switch, then see if you can borrow a GPU from someone and test to see if it boots.

How high exactly did you increase the values? Did you increase the voltage too?

Yeah unfortunately there is no bios switch on the board it’s an old b350m gaming pro. I didn’t increase the voltages although they may have been edited already as the gpu was already overclocked by the previous owner. I also have no friends to borrow a gpu from cuz I moved recently and don’t know anyone in my area with a free gpu floating around. Might have to resort to a repair shop for that.

The BIOS switch I'm referring to is on the RX 580, not the motherboard, it usually looks like this:

It might not be labeled "BIOS Switch" though. You might have to do some looking around to see where it's located on your specific card.

As far as the repair shop goes, testing should be swift: go in, test different GPU, boots, then you know it's the 580. They might be able to flash a new BIOS on it for you too.

Yeah I realized that after I responded then felt a little dumb lol. I don’t seem to have a bios switch on this model unfortunately. I actually have a Saphire pulse rx580 and I see a few other forums on the internet of people talking about a dual bios version but mine doesn’t have a bios switch unfortunately. I might need to go repair shop route on this one. Thanks for all the help tho it’s greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear that, and sorry we couldn't help you find a solution.

You're welcome on the help though. If the repair shop is good, they might be able to recover the GPU. I've seen GPUs brought back from the dead before from re-flashing the VBIOS. Hopefully they give you that option.

Otherwise you might have to invest in a new GPU. You can get a new RX 6600 for around $225. That's about 75% faster than your 580. There's not many options below that which make sense though, something to keep in mind.

Yeah I plan on overhauling the system anyway to am5 (since that’s the biggest bottleneck right now) and then upgrading the gpu later. Might be upgrading the gpu sooner than the cpu instead tho. That’s okay tho as maybe it will give the 3dv am5 CPUs some time to come down in price.

Honestly I’m just gonna use geek squad cuz they are the only ones I know of in my area right now unless there is some reason I should avoid them.

Won't hurt to try, although there seems to be mixed opinions on their services (mostly negative). They likely will try to upsell you on a new GPU. I doubt they will try to reflash the RX 580 though. It's also questionable if they will even try to boot the system with another GPU. They might see the debug LED showing VGA and call it quits, then charge you money for that. I could be wrong though, you might have one of the better Geek Squads.

as far im aware this is the default settings (for whatever reason!)

And apologies if i missed but, but you didn't actually boot into safe mode yet right?

you need to boot into safe mode and deinstall afterburner app. that's the only way to get rid of the overclock.

if you go to a repair shop they would do just that too.

really just go into safe mode -> apps -> remove / deinstall afterburner and then reboot into normal windows mode.

For you, you likely need to use this option to get into safe mode

Yeah unfortunately I couldn’t get into safemode yet. I followed the instructions you sent in that link for getting Sagemore from a blank screen but still nothing. I appreciate the suggestion tho, thank you.

Thanks for the info I’ll definitely keep that in mind if they seem bad. Might do a little digging around for a decent repair shop in my area. Thank you for the the tip tho!

Again, you're very welcome. I hope you can get this issue sorted.

Out of curiosity, I know it's a long shot. But try booting with only 1 stick of RAM installed, and in different memory slots. There might be some borked behavior that occurred not related to the GPU. Bad overclocks can cause some weird things to happen sometimes.

Haha yeah that’s the funny thing is that I only have one stick of ram anyway was this computer is ghettotastic. I still tried moving it to the other slot tho but got nothing again. I appreciate the suggestion tho.

At the end of the day I’ve been planning to upgrade for a long while now so it’s not the end of the world if this thing is bricked anyway. I’ll just find something that can run my 1440p monitor at a decent speed and I’ll be good.

I see. Well, it was worth a shot, no problem on the suggestion. There's not many other things I can think of trying, besides maybe putting the 580 in another computer and seeing if it boots.

Well I guess in that case the upgrade is coming early. For something that can run your 1440p monitor at a decent speed, I suggest looking at a RX 6700 XT. They can be had for around $350 and perform well at 1440p.
