Budget (including currency):  ~£1000

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Sims 4, Cities Skylines, Airport CEO, Surviving the Aftermath, Minecraft, plus day to day family usage

Other details don't need peripherals such as mouse, keyboard, speakers etc already have these.

The use of the Velka 3  (i might be able to move to a velka 5 just with space but its out of stock for a while, Densium 4 would fit, fractal ridge it to tall) is because house is small rental so we do not have much space at all so we cannot really fit a tower in or on the floor around the current WFH workstation. The Power Supply has the noctua upgrade to it.

I'm not after a top end gaming PC just one that will play city/base builders for me, minecraft for the child and sims for the wife. Doesn't need to be top end FPS either as long as its playable. I'm well aware that due to being a very SFF I'm paying a premium on parts and if we had the space to go bigger could get a far better setup so while budget can flex, I dont want to pay much more if it can be helped.

Any thoughts/advice?

If your willing to go a little larger than the Velka you could save a bit of cash and get better components. A Zalman M2 Mini is only £50 and it's footprint isn't much bigger at 33 by 15 (instead of 19 by 10).

Also, You should probably get a cheaper motherboard, SSD and PSU and spend the money you save on a better GPU. From what I remember the reviews of the 6400 were not promising.

Also, is 32GB of ram a requirement? 16GB will be fine for gaming.

Can you send the PC part picker link for your build?

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticeably improve performance past 240mm and don't improve at all past 360mm. 9) RTFM.

Yeah i was a bit concerned with the price of the Mobo but it also didn't want hot garbage for it

PC picker list is https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/ccamm88/saved/hhYrGX

the 6400 i agree isnt the best thing out there but I think for the use case it should hold up fine

Even so, the 6400 is the weak part of your build and it really dosn't need to be.

For motherboard, I'd get a ASRock B660M-ITX/ac Mini ITX LGA1700 Motherboard

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/fxC48d/asrock-b660m-itxac-mini-itx-lga1700-motherboard-b660m-itxac

It's not fancy but it will deal with this use case fine.

As for RAM, I'd drop to 16GB (2x8), there is no need to get 32GB

As for the SSD, I'd get a cheaper Dram-less drive. In your use case the lack of DRam shouldn't matter much (watch reviews to confirm this).

Also as stated above, consider a cheaper case (I relalise there is a space limit but the cheaper cases arn't much larger, how large is the space you have to fit it in?) and PSU.

Cheers I’ll take a look and have a play around with price and parts. Space wise is right because it’s got to fit on my desk around my existing setup.

the m2 mini informally is slightly taller (which isn’t a huge issue as long as not much taller) but twice as wide and almost twice as deep, it would end up hanging off the edge of the desk.

I will downgrade to 16gb ram, I think the 32gb came from seeing some builds but I guess they were trying to push as much as they could into the small case rather than what I need

So had a play around but to get the costs down, but a 3060 is plus £300. I want to keep the 32g/ ram as cities skylines and transport fever are memory hogs.

I guess it’s either shelve the idea for now or up the budget, or look what I can find second hand to reduce costs

right so back on this now and playing around with a few options as i do want to get this over the line and purchased

I have an intel option and an AMD option as I was playing around with parts and compatibility and I'm not wedded to either brand

AMD

for the Intel one

So the core change apart from the CPU is that although the AMD ones comes in about £50 more it replaces the 6400 for a 3050. Would love to stick a 3060 in there but for what its used for would be a)overkill and b) to expensive especially as its going to be a day to day PC with games such as Sims 4, Anno 1800, surviving the aftermath and airport ceo.

between the two which would you go with, and any recommendations on how to maybe bring the costs down (even if it hits specs slight as I don't need everything to be current gen without changing the case)

im guessing even a 1060 mini would be better than the 6400?
