Theory on why AMD is releasing the 7800X3D a month after the 7900X3D and 7950X3D

The obvious answer is money, they know people desperately want the 8 core and by releasing it a month later they might squeeze a few people into getting the 12 or 16 core.

 

However my theory is that Microsoft still hasn't fixed the issue regarding how it handles 2 CCDs in certain games and they dont want the 16 and 12 core too look bad up against the 8 core like it did when the 7000 series first launched.

My guess is that is simply an allocation of resources.

They like everyone, have limited capacity.

Given the limited capacity, where do you allocate resources?

 

Yeah, to your highest margin and halo products.

 

I actually think it bodes well for the technology.

If it ONLY had benefit for games, then they might have only launched the 7800x3D

 

The fact that they are going across the board and not launching the gaming version only indicates that there should be uplift for many more general applications.

Do people desperately want the 8 core?  How many have you confirmed?  

 

Your theory is predicated on a variable you have no way of knowing or even guessing.

 

I too think it is money driven, but from experience it is usually more what @mdk777 says.  Look at the past few years, as well as 50 years of economics.

 

Again, we're guessing.  I'd prefer to talk about Cayenne Pepper plants I am trying to grow.  Much more interesting.

I have a bunch of silcon and i need a return on my costs........

I start binning and push out the door the best i have at the highest cost i think i can ger.perfectly normal and makes sense.

rinse repeat with what is leftover.

I am not a marketing expert but i do know that bargain hunters are more patient than those that have money to burn for the latest and greatest across pretty much everything tech can offer.PC Cars Motorbikes new robot vacuum and the list is endless.

It's all about the binning process and silicon yield, IMO.

 

7950X / 7900X / 7800X are all 2x CCD CPUs, so they should be coming from the same wafer / dies.

A perfect 8-core CCD? Make a 7950X / 7950X3D out of it.

A few defect cores in the CCD? Make a 7900X / 7900X3D.

There is more profit margin in the higher end part.

Why use a perfect CCD for a 7800X when it can be put into a 7950X.

A few more defects in the CCD? Use that for the 7800X / 7800X3D.

 

Both AMD and Intel has been doing that for years.

Reject i9 Silicon gets parts fused off, and they become i7 / i5 / i3's... depending on the level of defect.

7800X is a single CCD product, same as the 7700X, it's a single CCD, just as the 7600X is.
