Hey forum,

 

 

I was just wondering, how hot can the water in my loop get? I just measured it and after running at gaming load for about an hour, my coolant was at 39.5°C in the reservoir. I have no idea what to think of that number, never thought of it before... In terms of coolant temperatures, how hot is hot and how cold is cold? Is there any max. temperature that shouldn't be exceeded (besides 100°C, I imagine that'd be bad :D )?

I'd say that higher ones are better because that means your water block is more efficient at getting the heat away form the processor.

 

Although, not too high, like 40 degrees is really ideal to be honest.

fair enough, but it could also mean that your radiators aren't dissipating enough heat, right?

usually 60° coolant temp is meltdown. some of the hardware might only be

able to survive 50°. usually any plexi items are limited to 50°, the pumps are

50-60°, any metal components have no constriction on temperature other

than just hot.

able to survive 50°. usually any plexi items are limited to 50°, the pumps are

50-60°, any metal components have no constriction on temperature other

than just hot.

can you give me an idea, how bad/good is 39°C? that's only 11°C from meltdown, but does it take a lot for the water temps to go from 40 to 50 or would running my fans a little slower be enough to cause something bad to happen?

ambient temperature is what?

 

it takes a lot of thermal malfunction to get coolant temperatures 20° above ambient.

ambient is around 23°C. I have a 360mm+120mm radiator, cooling a 4670k through a EK LTX waterblock and an R9 290 through a EK-FC block. CPU temps under load ~65°C, GPU temps max. 51°C.

temps are fine with that ambient. ratings on reviews usually hold the thermal

delta between 10°-15° and you are within that delta. only way to lower the

overall all would be more fan speed or less thermal development (turn down

the voltages).

good to know. I just measured again, (note that I'm just ghetto-measuring this by holding a fever thermometer in the reservoir) and after 1 hour of IETU stress testing the CPU + running Valley on the GPU, the GPU was at °53 and the CPU in the mid sixties, with occasional spikes into the high 70s. Coolant temperature was 39.9°C. I think I might be adding another 120mm radiator in the future...

easier test would be to increase the fan speed (louder, but testing) to see if

increasing the amount of fan/radiator will decrease your coolant temperature.

if it does, then proceed with another update. if it does not, then look to

increasing the efficiency of the hardware (or down clock if the temperatures

are not acceptable).

I'll just keep an eye on the temps for now, I was actually planning on lowering my pump voltage to 8V and reducing fan speed a little. If temps go through the roof when I do that, I'll add another 120mm radiator.
