Hi, I'm looking to build myself up a new pc in the next couple of months, probably using an i5 3570K. I've noticed the price on the 3570 has been pretty consistent for the last year or so, and wondered if we are likely to see the price fall when the new Haswell processors are released? What do you think?

I would think so, the demand for the 3570 would go down and therefore you would see sales and etc... go down with the older intel processors after a few months.

I don't think there will be any significant price drop in Ivy Bridge since the prices that I am noticing are not dropping significantly. Read the CPU Magazine "Watching the chips fall" section and you will notice that on Intel CPUs the prices arn't changing that much.

My experiences with price drops is pretty much that a product has to be either worthless to begin with or extremely old... and after a while they don't even sell them anymore. Like.. I can't find a HD5870 (The GPU I have) in my retailers anymore, even if it's not that bad. It's gone because it's 5 years old, which is how long, apparently, it takes for a computer to become worthless according to my dad who works in the business. (Don't quote me on that, he says a lot of weird things.. but oh well. He probably meant I couldn't sell a five year old computer on eBay.)

I would imagine that Intel has planned around the life cycle, so as they prepare to roll out the new chip they scale back production of the old, that way when the new chip is out they have a relatively small number of unsold old chips and those can probably be used up filling warranty returns or supplying OEMs.

And that's probably why we don't see the huge price cuts.

I'm not seeing Ivy-Bridge go down very much in price if at all, when Haswell comes to market. Haswell will only be 7%-10% faster then Ivy-Bridge

Thanks for the feeback everyone. It sounds like a significant price drop is very unlikely, so now it just comes down to whether I go with an Ivy Bridge or Haswell set up. This is my planned build as it stands (I'll be adding a graphics card down the line and using the onboard graphics for the time being): http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/rthomas/saved/1j3r . I think I'll wait until Haswell has been released though and see what the initial reviews are like before choosing, plus ram prices seem to be going through the roof at the moment so it's not a great time to buy.
