Windows RAM usage?

I’ve started to notice a weird trend. Seems Windows 10 for some reason only uses “so much” ram.

take these guys into account

 

32gb ram/Hp elitebook w8570 (something, she’s old) only uses around 8gb at all times, regardless of the workload. Plus she’s running datacenter 2022

384gb server, datacenter also, active server but uses 42gb at all times

64gb gaming/overclocking/usually “broken” pc lol, 11gb - Windows 10 enterprise

plus I fix ppls PCs on the side so I notice it there too

 

aside from virtualization and stuff which will increase the usage, what’s with the spread?  Server be at 0-1% usage, 1.2ghz and using more ram because it can?

Unused ram is useless ram. The more ram in your system, the more windows will use because it can. The rest of the usage will come from the programs that you are running. If you have low ram usage you are likely just simply not using a ram intensive task.

Every Pc was setup the same way, zero unnecessary tasks boot up with them. I don’t see how a server utilizes significantly more ram than a pc, only cause it can.

Depends where you are reading this, as RAM used by applications is not all RAM in use, its merely RAM which has priority as its considered actively in use and only freed up as a last resort.

 

Any spare RAM is used for caches to speed up disk operations but wont necessarily be shown as used because its immediately available for application use, as its it wont have any detrimental impact to ditch that data out of RAM other than the possibility that data might need to be read from the disk again later.

You also have to consider what applications might be doing.  Their average RAM usage might be low, but how much might they need temporarily to do a given operation?
