I’ve been dying to upgrade from this old dinosaur of an iPhone 11. The wife doesn’t want me upgrading until this one kicks the bucket. I’ve had some minor problems charging as of late, so I figure that’s a good avenue to exploit. Is there any way to absolutely ruin the lighting port without looking like I’ve totally destroyed my device?

Why not just get a new wife who has a new iphone then when the coast is clear you steal her phone and cross the border into mexico.

The perfect crime

Seriously just buy a new one or dont, but dont destroy a perfectly working phone for nothing.

Why not? Like I said, justification for a new one. It’s not just for her, it’s for me. I blew up a perfectly good 351 in my old ford, sitting still, so I could justify rebuilding it even though i was gonna do it in the first place (it’s a project, you know.) I can’t justify buying a new one while this one still semi-works. Besides, if my old phone still works, it’s gonna sit in a drawer and be dead until the battery breaks down and it will no longer take a charge anyway. So I’ll stop it from being clutter and just throw it in the trash sooner.

If you want to buy a new one don't ask others to justify your actions just do it and be done with it.

So what I'm hearing is that you don't just want to deceive your wife, you want to, in a sense, deceive yourself.

Look dude. How you navigate your relationship with your spouse and handle the family finances is your business, but I doubt many people here are going to be keen on the idea of giving you tips on how to purposefully turn functioning devices into e-waste.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Fuck em then, I’ll figure out how to do it my self.

Look into Apple repairs for the port instead of assuming a new device is your only cheapest option.  For $69 you get get a battery replacement, and turn on the new 80% charge feature in battery settings for better overall capacity over the next two years of updates.

(not needed for your device yet, but it won't be more than a year or so, and you'll prpbably want a new battery)

Your iPhone 11 can have iOS 16 and judging by Apple's usual update allowances, you will get at least two or three more years of updates.

Just be grateful for the technology you have, and congratulations for sticking with iPhone, usually they get six years of updates.  It's not a terrible amount but it's more than five with Google Pixel amd four from Samsung.

If you want the reality of how your iPhones are produced, go look up conflict minerals and cobalt mining.  It's just inhumane.

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.  Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.
