It's based on profile age, number of posts and some other more obscure factors. TL;DR raise your rank by participating in discussion regularly.

you have to find a mod and pay them 10 bucks.   You only get to be a veteran if you pass the right of passage, To do this you have to collect internets from every country by wining them in a LARPA jousting competition.  There's a cheat though, I found some of mine under the cushions in the off topic forum, you'd be surprised what shit collects in there.

 

Seriously, don't even think about it, just join the conversation,  find topics that interest you and away you go.  One day you'll turn around and have all the numbers, but you'll find they mean nothing.  Mine certainly don't prove anything other than I've been here for a while.

As you see, ranks don’t matter. It’s based on forum use generally and not what people actually know. 
 

People need to not care about what it says under a profile picture and pay attention to what’s being said in the post next to that profile picture.
