I am looking for an upgrade option from the note 9 for my partner. The only real reasons for upgrading are support for dual sim and better performance in genshin impact. I was thinking the s22 ultra as he likes the s pen and large screen, but any other options to consider?

Are you only open to Samsung or are you also considering Apple?

Have you tried turning it off and on again? Maybe Restart it?

Apple and Samsung are the only brands out there?

No there are many more, but Apple and Samsung are the most common.

Have you tried turning it off and on again? Maybe Restart it?

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S23 Ultra around February 1st, so I'd wait for that unless you can find a particularly good deal for the S22 Ultra. It probably won't be a huge upgrade over last year's phone, but it will ensure your partner has the latest and greatest.

If not that, then an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max. Only iPhones have an optional 120FPS mode in Genshin. I wouldn't buy an iPhone just for that, but it's worth considering if your partner spends a ton of time in that game.

Or a good deal on the s22.
if they don’t care about the s pen being built in, the fold has a bigger screen and s pen support, but if they use a phone for 4 years(as it looks like he does) durability is still a large issue.

if they don't know much about the less common brands, they are most likely going to go for the ones that they have more experience with.

Sony is a great brand with a specific guide explaining exactly how to unlock their devices.  However the screen brightness outdoors may be lacking in some models like the Z XZ and X models, but do your research.  Maybe that's improved or maybe auto brightness went a lot higher.  So really I don't know what I'm talking about but maybe worth the mention if that's important.

Motorola is a cool brand, for a short amount of time they assembled some parts cases, accessories in the USA!  So good on Motorola for (a short time) supporting well-paid, well treated workers!  Also they have a clean android system, always important.

HTC has cool models, but you won't get anymore software support, LG V20 and up has some cool audio stuff, I bet it's almost as good as Sony's DACs.  Both HTC and LG have stopped production, but still cool devices.

I don't expect people to know each brand, and I'm only recently, in the last three or four years, learning about Motorola, their clean andriod and the USA manufactured cases, that hapoened in 2014.

So there's a lot better brands than samsung out there to pick from.  I just don't recommend ANY new brands that android didn't have since 2012.  And I'm serious.  I'm not mentioning names, you know what brands I'm referring to, some of which take IP from other compamies, and we are blindly supporting and trusting them, not cool.

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

NoScript or EFF's privacy badger addons can block many scripts and websites that would load and track you, possibly halving page load time!

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.  Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.

I upgraded my Note 9 512 to a Sony Xperia I IV 512.

Have been very happy, only miss the pen a little.

It ticked all of my boxes.

fingerprint sensor (built into the power button, its fast)

dedicated camera button (a little faster than double pressing power on my note 9)

headphone jack

dual SIM (or sim + SD card)

512GB of onboard memory and it came in black.

I would highly recommend looking at the xperia i iv as a replacement for Note 9.

unless you really want the built in stylus (I gave it up grudgingly but found that I was okay without it)
