PC restart when start elden ring

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

The saga concludes.

I unplugged everything including on power supply side (I think I tried this once before)

AND I updated bios.

Now iz work.

It's inconsistent but when I start elden ring from steam, my PC restarts sometimes as it loads the main menu.

Sometimes this happens just by having 1-2 tabs of Google chrome open and opening elden ring.

Sometimes this happens with unreal engine open.

Sometimes this happens with epic game launcher open.

Rarely it happens when nothing is open.

Once I'm in game, I have zero problems. I have had zero problems in any game.

Event viewer says it's potentially a power issue from potential disconnecting power.

I have a bitfenix formula gold 550W PSU. This is a top tier power supply according to LTT power supply tier list.

Other specs:

Ryzen 5600 no overclock

As rock motherboard pro 4 b450 (Max memory speed supported is 3200)

2x 16gb Corsair vengeance 3600 mhz (enabled xmp)

Asus AMD 6700xt graphics card

3 hard drives

1 SSD

1 DVD drive

4~ regular fans.

Stock CPU cooler.

This should be under the wattage limit as before I had elden ring I could play any game with an AMD R9 390 from MSI. (Except my PC would hard power off in metro 2033 redux)

Just weird that it's happening when starting elden ring.

Sound like PSU related as it cannot handle the power spike when starting game? Try undervolt/power limit both your CPU and GPU.

Is there a program you recommend that I can do this with easily?

For the AMD GPU you can do it directly from the driver utility. It should have a button to auto-undervolt. It's likely not as good as what you could achieve manually, but also much less work.

Do you have the latest bios?

Latest AMD chipset drivers downloaded from AMD?

Are you monitoring your temperatures with something?

Does it crash in Unigine Heaven, MSI Kombustor, Furmark?

So undervolting it using that tool worked.

I double checked by closing the game, going back to default and re opening the game to be met with a hard restart.

The card was purchased less than a month ago or so.

I have driver adrenaline 22.11.2 released November 30. Just checked for updates and it's the latest. Downloaded from AMD website.

I cannot find the bios download anywhere but I have 020.002.000.019

Bios date:

2021/08/24

I'm guessing that's not the latest bios if they update it.

I guess I might have to undervolt until I get a higher capacity PSU?

Or find some other lower voltage configuration.

I can try downloading asus' overclock software and give that a shot.

I'll see what I can find but if there's anything new I'm not going to mark as solved just yet until I have more information.

Ah.

I downloaded the bios from as rock.

I just updated to one or two versions after Ryzen 5,000.

I saw there was a bios for rtx 4000 series but I didn't see any notes for rx 6000 series nor the likes.

Should I download motherboard bios from AMD?

Always use the latest Bios, not all fixes/improvements are mentioned in the notes.

The latest version is 5.60

https://www.asrock.com/mb/amd/b450 pro4/index.asp#BIOS

If you're on 5.31 with Agesa 1207 it's also fine, but if you're on older - flash the latest.

AMD does not provide BIOSes. I will repeat, I am talking about the CHIPSET DRIVERS.

The chipset is a part of the motherboard, it allows the CPU to communicate with the other parts and it also regulates some PCI-E ports, USB-s etc.

Which exact Asus GPU model do you have?

So it looks like I have 5.0 which I seem to recall. It's the latest version that isn't beta.... (but....)

So it looks like 5.22 and 5.31 are beta... should I really risk skipping the beta bios to that one?
I thought they jumped to 5.6 for some inexplicable reason so people in BETA bios can still upgrade bios to use RTX 40 series.

It looks like I have the regular "Dual" RX6700XT.

There is an "OC" variant, but I don't see OC anywhere on the box and the part number didn't find the OC variant.

There's generally no need to update the BIOS "in order" you can go directly to the latest one. They are not incremental updates but always replace/overwrite the complete image.

If a previous one is required, there's normally a special note telling you so. Afaik, that is only the case if it also updates some firmware in addition to the BIOS. In that case you can often also not go back to an older version.

I just found it weird that there are beta versions of BIOS in a lower version than a full release bios

Yeah, that's kinda weird. I'd normally expect them to be removed once the next release version is out. Maybe they have some feature that people use that was removed in the release version? 🤷‍♂️

I think it might come down to my motherboard or power supply.

I will try updating my bios.

I don't know if motherboards just die with use because that would be bizarre.

I kinda expected that. Could be RAM as well if reboot, hard reboot randomly or only when there's a load spike?

Let's test your RAM.

  1. Download Testmem5, load 1usmus config. https://www.overclock.net/threads/memory-testing-with-testmem5-tm5-with-custom-configs.1751608/
  2. If Testmem5 pass, open your side panel and nudge both your RAM stick with your finger while the PC is running. If that make your system reboot/froze, remove your RAM stick and clean the contact with a piece of plain paper or rubber eraser, also clean the RAM slot from dust. Do the same test again.

I opened that program and pushed on both sides and the tops of the dimms.

Nothing happened.

Memory test program:

No picture. .

No picture but the pop-up says "the testing is completed, of errors is not detected"

So looks like my memory is all good.

my CPU supports up to 3200mhz. My ram xmp is set to 3600mhz. I'll see if I can't clock my memory to 3200mhz.

I'll try reseating my graphics card and my power plugs too.

Idk why my mouse cursor randomly stutters on the desktop and YouTube sometimes flashes uncontrollably.

Elden ring runs perfectly fine.

I also tried.playing uncharted last night and it crashed and I can't figure out these event viewer logs to see if the crash was from power or what.

The screen just kinda was black and then showed a crash report tool.

The saga continues...

I started seeing this message in event viewer now & then:

Seems to be common enough that a few search results manifest.

Bizarre issue as well when I turned my PC on the other day that it just took FOREVER to load the desktop and its icons. Like the "file explorer" program.

I adjusted CPU voltage from 1.0 to 1.35 at 3.5 ghz.

I forget if I mentioned it here but I upgraded my psu to an 850 Corsair top tier unit.

Elden ring doesn't crash but warzone 2.0 crashes every time on startup without fail.

Another AAA game crashes 7/10 times on startup, or on landing on main menu. It varies.

I tried turning everything off in the room except the computer and one monitor. Speakers, second monitor... Doesn't matter. So I'm assuming I'm receiving sufficient power delivery.

I feel like the last thing I can try is a UPS.

So bizarre because I can run EVERYTHING except AAA games. I can run unreal engine, big davinci resolve projects, any indie game.

But I can't open some games.
