Gaming PC Long-term build, First PC build

Go to solution Solved by Dukesilver27-,

What you configured wouldn't even get 120fps in 1440p, and that Digital Storm build is very expensive for what it is.

What I configured below would be a strong 4K performer and a beast in 1440p.

I went with 13600K, but if you want to stay within $1800, 12600K is fine too, it's just 13600K is a beast of a gaming CPU. And go from 32GB to 16GB.

Last gen GPU prices now are still terrible, between 6900XT, 6950XT, 3080 12GB, and 7900 XT, the price differences are so small, so 7900XT beats all the rest. Or to stay within budget, go with 6900XT/6950 XT.

1440p build so stick with the lower end of the budget.

Budget (including currency): $1500-1800 USD

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Majority gaming use, Apex, COD, League of Legends, CS:GO, Valorant, Overwatch, Civ VI, Rainbow 6: Siege, etc.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): So I am uneducated on building PC's I haven't had a computer class since 2010. I do know that their were some big announcements in the area of cpu's at the end of last year and that is the extent of my knowledge. I have done a few pc builders but my biggest concern is longevity of the system before needed to be upgraded, mainly in the cpu.

Minimum Resolution: 2K

Preferred: 4K

General FPS: Around 120

CPU: Intel i5-12400f 6-core

Motherboard: ASUS B660 Series - Intel

Ram: 16GB DDR4 Dual Channel

Storage: 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD (This seems very small, I'm thinking I will need to add a HDD for extra storage. Does this impact anything if I add a HDD? Can it just be used for storage as I have heard its better to "run" off the SSD, no clue what they were trying to say by that.)

GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8GB

Power: 700W ATX 80 Plus Gold

Wireless 802.11ac (No clue what this is just saw it on a few builds I was looking at for reference so here it is)

Cooling: No idea what I need here but I would prefer liquid (cuz it looks cool) unless that will make upgrading in the future more difficult than its worth.

Monitor: something that will at least do 2K preferably 4K.

I have build one on Digital Storm and I have included that link as well: https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=4590102

I don't have an issue buying a custom build from a place like Digital Storm but I just don't know if will be what I need for the long term. I just don't want to get something that is going to struggle with any new games that come out in the next few years.

Places like Digital Storm are usually horrible value for the money. You're far better off just building it on your own.

If you're not against used hardware, there's tons of GPUs out there right now.

Did you need a monitor or peripherals in your build?

If you wanted to play 4k games, I'd probably go with something like this:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: Intel Core i5-12600KF 3.7 GHz 10-Core Processor  ($244.99 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Deepcool AK620 68.99 CFM CPU Cooler  ($75.78 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Asus PRIME Z690-P WIFI D4 ATX LGA1700 Motherboard  ($205.03 @ B&H)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory  ($83.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Sabrent Rocket 4.0 500 GB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive  ($49.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Inland Prime 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive  ($149.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: XFX Speedster MERC 310 Black Edition Radeon RX 7900 XT 20 GB Video Card  ($899.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case  ($104.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: Corsair RM850x (2021) 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply  ($137.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $1952.74

You can shave money by:

  • Going with a 1TB additional drive. There's no need to use an HDD here, SSDs are quite cheap.
  • Going with a used video card.
  • Going with a slightly smaller cooler.

If you only play eSports games, then you can also likely get away with a lower tier video card.

Yes I would need a new monitor.

Are their any peripherals that you would recommend, even if they are something I get a little later down the line?

This is were my lack of knowledge hits, is this CPU going to be enough to run new games that come out in the next few year?
Video Card: XFX Speedster MERC 310 Black Edition Radeon RX 7900 XT 20 GB Video Card  ($899.99 @ Newegg)
I do tend to play more eSport games but I also play games like Elden Ring and Cyberpunk, what would this card be the safest option as I have noticed myself moving more to non-eSport games?

Thank you very much for your advice I truly appreciate it.

  • 3 weeks later...

So my system is up and running kinda, I need to put on OS on it now. But I see that I don't have a CD-rom. My other computer is a MacBook Pro with no USB slots to put a storage device into. I have a work computer but I'm not sure if that will work?
