It is purely on the GPU

 

The GPU uses AI interpolation to render an itermediate frame between the most current frame and previous frame. This frame is then shown before the actual frame from the game engine. This increases motion fluidity, but also increases latency. So it only increases percieved fps, not actual game engine fps.

wait... not saying the explanation is wrong,  i get what you're saying,  but it *does* increase fps...? ive seen it in DDTS latest "let's make fun of AMD" episode...

 

he gets like 50fps... turns on dlss3 and gets like 100*... (could be wrong about the numbers but it did increase significantly) 

*on a 3080 iirc, which is funny cause it's not supposed to support dlss3 afaik

 

 

I understand what you're saying as those are supposedly "fake" frames, ie not actually new ones, but they still get displayed thus *increasing* fps,  technically, real fps... (just not with 100% "original" frames so to say)?

 

 

 

ps: ah checked the video, he gets ~70 with dlss3,  30 without...

(its pretty much in the first few minutes...)

Isn't this the new frame generation tech from nvidia?

Yes and no.

 

It does increase the fps you can see on screen. It does this by generating additional frames on the GPU, that are shown in between the frames generated by the game engine.

 

The game engine still runs at the same fps as previously.

 

So you can see 100 fps, but the engine still runs at 50 fps, with the input latency of 50 fps.

 

In addition, to generate the in-between frame, it has to delay the last engine generated frame, which adds additional latency.

 

So it will look smoother, but not necessarily feel smoother. Which is why most reviews say it only makes sense if your base frame rate is high enough.

Yes. Frame generation, also know as DLSS 3.0, for some reason, since it's not really related to the upscaling done by DLSS originally.

oh... ok, i see... the latency might be an issue, Dawid seemed happy with the fps though,  and it really looked smoother at 70 fps vs 30, obviously. 

 

 

*tbf he's also happy with 12fps in GTAV, but yeah xD

Seems to vary by game. I've seen reviewers that said it wasn't good in Spiderman and had visual arrifacts but was very good in the Witcher 3 update.

yeah... same as regular dlss... some games its good some it looks like a ps1 game!
