Hi Folks!

Building my first NAS/Plex server.

Looking for reccomendations on:

  • Unraid vs TrueNAS
  • Jellyfin vs Plex (note: need HDR to SDR tone mapping)

Was thinking of using following hardware:

  • i3 12100 (hardware acceleration for transcoding) (does not support ECC, does this matter?)
  • 2x8GB RAM
  • Fractal Design Node 304 case
  • 6x 8TB Seagate Archive HDD's

Jelly fin is better if you don't want to pay to use your own server. ECC does not really matter. i think you should also get a 256gb SSD (brand really does not matter i prefer Crucial BX 500/ if you have money go with a Samsung 870 EVO)  just to run the OS

I wouldnt be building an array with Seagate Archive's, the write on them is excrutiatingly slow and could cause issues with a proper array.

I'd stick with UnRAID with using those drives.

As @Gokul_P said, I would go Jellyfin unless you want to pay for PlexPass. You'd be best to use hardware acceleration for the tone mapping / transcoding.

These OS run off a USB stick, but id also get an SSD to hold your Docker containers and Plex/Jellyfin Metadata. Preferably at least 250GB. If you use Plex with video thumbnails id go for at least a 500GB.

I've heard that the Kernel in TrueNAS Scale seems to be out-dated that would not have proper drivers for iGPUs with 12th gen Core. Hence it may not be capable of transcoding... UnRAID on the other hand has a latest Kernel which supports such hardware.

TrueNAS Core is out of question here (no Docker function).

Then, both Jellyfin & Plex make transcoding well. I'd prefer Plex for media management (slightly better), & local playback (except paid for remote transcoding & playback); if unwilling for royalty over transcoding & having a VPN back to home, go ahead for Jellyfin.

BTW, except had such drives already working, it should always be better for picking up some Exos or HC320 drives...
