Nvidia's drivers work on almost every GPU they have.

My GTX 780 and GTX 1070, two different cards that are 2 generations of hardware apart, both used the same GeForce Game Ready driver version.

So unless you're going way back, it should be okay. The only issue here is the system not knowing what to do with both GPUs as they're not in SLI. It's a tough question to answer without having more details about your PC and context for your situation.

If you updated the most recent nvidia driver, what you need to do is to roll back. I have two 30 series cards and the 2nd gpu got an error 31 and won't work after an update. Did everything and don't know what's going on. So I went back to 522.25 and the 2nd gpu work again. There are newer drivers between 522.25 and the current 527.37, so I don't know which is the newest that don't have the issue. 522.25 works, and I don't have the time to test the other drivers.

I didn't had the time, so If you have the time, would you be able to test and swap the gpus? Connect the older card to the main 16x pcie and see if the newer card would stop working or if it would still be the older one. Thanks! But I do hope the rollback helps you.
