Looking for honest upgrade advice please

Sicarii

Hello all,

for mainly gaming I am looking to upgrade my rig:

CPU: Intel I7-8700K

Motherboard: ROG Strix Z370-H Gaming

GPU: Gigabyte Aorus Master RTX 3080 Gen1

Memory: 2x DDR4 F4-4133C19-8GTZR + 2x DDR4 G.Skill F4-3000C15-8GRBB

I Was looking to upgrade my CPU and Board, should I include the RAM also to DDR5, or should I stick with my DDR4 and replace the F4-3000C sticks ?

What would you guys recommend as a combo?

Budget would be around 1000EUR (1040 USD)

Before i make any recommendations, are you using this build for gaming, or streaming/rendering/productivity?

Is OCing the CPU important to you?

What sort of tools or features do you need on the MB?

I ask because that's the diff between recommending waiting for a 13400 or pulling the trigger on a 13600K

At that budget, you can move up to DDR5 RAM easily, so that's at least one concern you can settle.

Salt SYSTEMs:

SYSTEM-Infinity+1(Centerpiece) -- Ryzen 5600X + RX 6800 XT + Galahad 360 + 32GB + Thermaltake P3

SYSTEM-Embrace (Portable) --Ryzen 5600 + RX 5700 XT + Galahad 240 + 16GB + Hyte Revolt 3

Hey @NaClKnight, thank you for answering 🙂

I would be looking to mainly Game. (some work with multiple virtual machines but the bulk is gaming)

OCing is not that important for me. I Still run my 8700K stock (I know, I know, it's a waste 😄)

I am aiming to expand my current m2 storage to 4 (Gen4, if Gen5 prepared that would be great), so having the 4 slots would be a plus for me. High speed LAN / WIFI would be a plus.

Hello @Omar.B I am in Portugal.

Thanks for the welcome 🙂

Do you already have case , psu and storage or do you need ?

I do have as case a Lian-LI PC011 - with a corsair H150I AIO

PSU is a Seasonic Focus Gold GX 850W Full Modular.

Storage I have ADATA SX8200NP and a WDS500G3XHC-00SJ + some mechanical HDD's, that are all disconnected as I don't like the noise they make 😄

I do plan to buy either the 2TB version of the 980 pro or the SN850X, though the SN850X massive price drop on the 4TB version here in Portugal, is leaving me on edge to press the purchase button. ( this is NOT included in the 1000€ budget )

changing the ram is important , you can still change the ram that I choose and pick the one that you like , staying with DDR4 is still good you can wait at least 2 years if you wanna upgrade into DDR5 XD, you still have about 300€ left to do what you want

Interesting approach on AMD , Honestly I wasn't even putting AMD in the table.

Is the 5800X3D, worth it over the 13600k ?

The extra 300€ does give me the leeway I need to go for the SN850X 4TB without going to much over the top.

thanks for the time you spent to advise me Omar!

I wouldn’t personally recommend the 5800x3d. The 13600k is better. If you wanted to go AMD, I’d spend the extra on Ryzen 7000. That would at least give you an upgrade path. Even on AM4, the 5900x is a better option than the 5800x3d. It has been cheaper here in the US lately. The gaming benefit the 5800x3d has over the 5900x in some games isn’t worth getting a processor that has less cores and worse in everything outside of gaming.  Honestly, the gaming experience on most processors from the same family is about the same if you play at 1440p. We sometimes forget that CPU gaming benchmarks are done at 1080p with a 4090 in order to exaggerate the results.

Its true better for future but its still overpriced and yet we still dont have a game that will use the advantage from stuff like the PCIE 5 , DDR5..etc

I mean he can still go with the 5600x or I5 12400f , or with 5800x , i7 12700f .

There's a lot of options you can pick just find the thing that suit your work on the PC like gmaing , adobe ...etc

What resolution are you gaming?

The 8700k would actually perform well at 1440p as the load shifts more toward the GPU.

Granted if you just want to upgrade, go nuts.  We're at an odd time where cpus aren't really all that separated at higher resolution.

I've been doing 1440p mostly. both my monitors are 1440p 165Hz, so that's what I have been doing and the 3080 is doing a good job supporting the games with this resolution.

should I hold on to this 8700K till next gen comes up and an upgrade is actually "worth something"?

13600k edges out the 5800x3d.  Not sure what you're seeing.

Obviously resolutions increase the gap closes but the 13600k is the stronger cpu.

If the 8700k isn't giving you frame rates you want, then upgrade.

If it's just that you feel it's getting old and there are better cpus out there, there are.  But are they better enough to warrant that money?

I'd Auto OC the 8700k to 5ghz and see what that does for you.  Then make your decision.

At 1440p I'd still say it's got plenty of juice but I don't know what fps you're getting in your games.

Don't spend if you don't have to but also there may be other things 1000 euro can do for you.

I just want to put my thoughts on this right here

I have a 5ghz 8700k (DDR4 3200), a 5.1ghz 10900k (DDR4 4000), and a 5.5ghz 13700k (DDR5 6000), all OC'd and all have been paired at one point or another with a 3080.

While the 13700K does feel smoother than the 8700k, the overall difference between the 8700k and 13700k does not feel like night and day in games, despite the 13700k having nearly 60% higher single threaded performance.

I'm sure at some point that will happen, but that is not with a 3080 and not in most of the games I play.

I honestly wish I bought a better desk than the 13700k.

The 13600k is a better experience all around. Someone could still buy a ddr4 board, the MSI Pro A is often on sale for $159, if they wanted to save money. The 5800x3d only makes sense if someone already has an AM4 setup. Even then, the 5900x is a better processor.
