Hi all,

New to the forums, looking for some advice.

Budget (including currency): ~$500 CAD(after selling current parts)

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: 1440p/4k gaming, photoshop/maya/blender/ue5/unity hobbyist

Other details: Current PC parts found here at pc part picker link: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/F4j7H2

TL;DC:

CPU: AMD 2700x  (Stock Speeds)

GPU: Gigabyte GAMING OC GeForce RTX 3080 12GB LHR 12 GB Video Card

RAM: G.Skill Flare X 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL14 Memory

Small data hoarder problem aside (i really do need to clean it up, dont judge too much!), also will play on a Sony A80J via fiber hdmi 2.1 cable (works quite well, gets the 120hz refresh/hdr/etc to the tv)

What I'm Looking For:

Ideally looking for an upgrade that will smooth out some...bumps...fps wise in some games running at 1440p/4k(normally high fps even at 4k, but sometimes dropping to 20/30s causing not so good fun times), as well as potential cpu cooler upgrades since currently running stock Prism Wraith Cooler.

recently noticed that the temps were hitting ~90C while playing Assassins Creed Odyssey at 1440p (not great) changed some fan settings, apparently the Wraith has a High mode - turned that on, fan is loud temps are cool.

and 80-90fps drops down to the 20s randomly just while playing. not the only game ive experienced this with. RE7/God of War/Horizon all have these massive stutters that seemingly come out of no where, sometimes even Counter Strike:Source will spike down from 300-400fps to 30.

Looking to hit smoother gameplay while gaming at the higher resolutions (1440p/4k).  im not too worried about pushing max fps, but more consistent experience.

The question I'm debating:

Is it worth it to just do a CPU socket upgrade for stability?

go for a 56/5800x?

Is the 5800x3d worth it over the regular 5800x?

should I re-paste the stock cooler, see if that helps before an upgrade?

Overall I'd rather not buy a brand new mobo/cpu/ram combo unless absolutely necessary. I built the original system in 2018 with a Gigabyte 1080, and upgraded to the 3080 12GB before the prices got crazy again (<$1000 before taxes)

Let me know your thoughts, curious to see what techies would recommend!

Thanks,

InvincibleMagus

Here is an article on how the 5800x compares to 5800x3d with a 4090. I am unsure how much of this change translates to a 3080.

From what I see, you have a stock cooler and a solid front case. You could improve thermals by getting a new cpu cooler and a more airflow centered case.

You could likely get the 5800x, new cooler, and case for around 500 CAD.

My PC Specs: (expand to view)

Main Gaming Machine

CPU:  Intel Core i7-14700K
CPU Cooler: Deepcool LT720
Motherboard: MSI PRO Z790-P WIFI
Memory: G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6400

Storage 1: Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB

Storage 2: Crucial P3 Plus 4 TB
Video Card: EVGA XC3 ULTRA GAMING GeForce RTX 3080 10GB

Power Supply: Corsair RM850 850W
Case: Corsair 7000D Airflow
Case Fan 140mm: Noctua A14 PWM 82.5 CFM 140 mm (x7)
Monitor Main: MSI G274QPF-QD 27.0" 2560 x 1440 170 Hz
Monitor Vertical: Asus VA27EHE 27.0" 1920x1080 75 Hz

I got a 5800X for $250 USD.  It runs a fair bit hotter than the 1700 that was in there previously.  Stock cooler is no bueno.  5600X has lower TDP and comes with a cooler.  If you get a 5800X, maybe get a nice nice tower that fits like a Noctua or a CLC if you swing that way.  Looking at the 5800X vs. the 5800X3D I didn't see an overly compelling reason to pay the extra, really even for gaming. I'm sure it makes a difference, but it wasn't worth the extra money for me personally.

Have you checked while playing and experiencing one of those drops in performance if the thermal throttling flag is definite, i.e. like via HWINFO64 sensors?

Thanks for the link, it was an interesting read! makes me lean more towards the X3D since i do play most of those games.
My case actually has a mesh front panel with 2x140mm fans, this case came with the option of a solid or mesh front so i chose the mesh, and the solid panel is still in the box.

I am thinking of upgrading the cpu cooler from stock to something else, maybe a 280mm AIO. (what can i say, i like the flashy RGB-but it might be overkill) my case has ample space for mounting with the radiator on top or front.

I was checking with HWINFO64, and had the Tdie temp spike to 90C, though I havent done much testing yet after changing the fan profiles, been busy. in my digging i found that max temp for the cpu is ~85 so I'm not sure how often ive been hitting that temperature or higher since i really just started monitoring it with hwinfo.

I was/am using MSI Afterburner/Riva Tuner to view stats in game, but i never saw it get that hot(much closer before the fan tweaking), just massive frame drops.

It wasn't until I had HWINFO open on my other screen that i saw the temps hit ~90C and started thinking about tweaking fans/cooler/upgrading the CPU

Thanks TylerD321 and PineyCreek for your input!

I'll keep this open a bit longer and see if theres any other ideas 🙂

I believe in the newer generations it's not abnormal for it to hit 90C in synthetic benchmark testing.  At least, my 5800X does it.  The key is that though Tdie hits 90C (i.e. the measurement IN the CPU, not close to it) whether or not it thermally throttles. At least based on HWINFO64, mine will run Cinebench, hit 90C on Tdie, but not thermally throttle.  It hit its coded limit, but the cooling system is enough to prevent it from exceeding the limit, so it doesn't thermally throttle...at least that's my understanding.  I have zero stability issues in gaming or synthetics, and people say the 5800X is a heater.  Runs at 70s during gaming, never above.  Maybe it's the same scenario?  The same sensors page for HWINFO64 should show thermal throttling flags (Yes/No) further down the list of sensors I believe that you could check while running a synthetic benchmark.

Either way, the 700s and up don't come with stock coolers for a reason, I would guess.  If you have a poor airflow case then either get a CLC for the CPU and vent it out the top maybe (and it still won't be as efficient as getting better cold air coming in) or better do what @TylerD321suggested.  Before any of that though see if you can get it to the latest BIOS without issue first if you're buying a new CPU, or at least have the ability to return an unopened CPU easily.  No point in wasting money if your decision might change due to a non-zero (but quite low) chance of bricking the motherboard on a failed BIOS update.  Also, read the notes to check if there's any bridge BIOS updates you need to hit in between your current and the most recent updates.
