Best encryption software for personal HDD

I have WD discovery for my WD drives.

Any others out there that I can use without having to install the SW on the computer first to access it?

There are a couple of options out there including windows bitlocker. I am guessing you are encrypting your internal drives? For external drives that makes sense if you are in an office or other people have access to that drive. Inside your pc, those drives will be damn slow and sluggish, depending on the level of encryption and your processor. I use ESET to encrypt external drives in the office (backups). Can't speak about it's security though, just that the insurance company requires us to do so.

Why not use Veracrypt. It has a portable version that does not need installed. It is cross platform, so it works in Windows, Linux and Mac.

Depends on what exactly you want to achieve.

Your best bet is probably VeraCrypt. It's not built into Windows so you will need a program to use it, but the program itself does not need to be installed, it can be ran in portable mode.

This would be for my personal drive. Thinking of getting a 5TB over black friday and finally doing the whole backup scene.

Like WD discovery where the SW runs as you plug in the device. Want it for my personal HDD.
