I built a new system yesterday, but for some reason i can't figure out why my cpu core temps so high on full load

 

My case is Lian Li Lancool II

and cooler is Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML360 Illusion ARGB Liquid CPU Cooler

 

i7-13700k

3080ti

32gb 6000 ddr5

 

i have drawn the fan flow vectors in the picture, and the temps while running cinebench r23 multi core benchmark

 

i have used proper thermal compound and generally did as instructions suggested , i reapplied thermal paste twice to check if it was problematic ( i have some experience building and tweaking with pcs) 

any advice will be much appreciated

Why all exhaust layout? Especially the radiator fans, making the CPU essentially warmed by the GPU.

To state the obvious, your intake is at the top, those cool air your top intake pulled is either immediately exhausted by the back exhaust or front exhaust.

Where is the air to be pulled by the radiator fans coming from? Also, why not configure them to be intakes?

Occassionaly visits the forum when I have nothing to do at work.

Then it's Intel's no power limit approach (by setting a super high value) to their CPUs then, you'll have to enable it in your BIOS by setting a more reasonable number. Try 200W on PL1 (long term power, something similar since different BIOS calls it slightly differently) and see.

What you have here is the same amount of exhaust fans as intake fans. Also as the other people suggested, mount your rad as in intake and maybe set the top fans to be exhausts. Intel CPUs tend to run hot, but 100°C on just 170W with a 360mm AIO is very high. I can get 170W on my I7-9700 with a cooler rated for 130W but it has to go down to 165W eventually. Well the VRMs eventually thermal throttle my CPU down to 65W for a few seconds, and then they get it back to 170W. All that at a room temp of ~22°C

Here what i would do:

- Check if the pump is plugged and working

- Test without the side panel on. This to remove any possible doubts on the fan orientation, with how you mounted them they should have all the fresh air they want without the side panel forcing the air path you wanted

- Check on the thermal paste application (take a picture 😉 ), it's possible that the waterblock is not making a good contact with one screw not mounted correctly maybe

 

How about the temperature of the room?

i have set up two more fans on the rad, so total 5 fans on 360 rad all pulling in fresh air from outside which gets fresh cold air of 20C from AC two meters away , without the side panel, still at 100% load, on cinebench or blender renders, its the same 100C on one/two cores, and it stays at 5.1 ghz p core for as long as i run it (not the max boost 5.3/5.4 mark, it gets throttled)

Your CPU draws 10/15W more than mine while not maintaining the multiplier at 53 and with that much air the radiator should maintain the cpu way cooler

I'm still convinced that somehow the heat is not coming to the rad (pump not really working or bad adhesion on the cold plate).

 

Right now (-0.1V offset) here what i'm getting (i'm on windows 11, cinebench got that wrong)

Those temperatures comes almost instantaneously

 

On the BIOS you have a settings that on my asus board is called multi core enhancement, with my understanding that setting if enabled ignore intel's default power limits and you can try to disable it

It's just a blind try tho, intel's default power limits on that CPU should be 235W and you are not over that

i would be more than happy to have my processor on 90C on 100% load, i am quite lost for causes right now, but ordered some good thermal paste,( cryofuze and thermal gr kry) lets see what happens after this. (now using thermaltake tg50), and yes, my rad does get hot, the top fans blow moderate amount of hot air, but on the bottom the rad is cold.. I agree with you. It is either the contact or the cooler itself may have issues.(idk) , It idles at 5C above room temp though(i am so lost)

 

i tried limiting the power, if i set at 185W ; it stays at 90-93C (at 50/51 multiplier)

 

one thing i tried was cooling the room to 16C full airflow AC- my cinebench scores almost reached 31k)- with like 230+ wattage (i forgot to check the exact amount)(but it throttled obviously after a run)

well that layout is certainly weird. what helps me understanding airflow is that hot air rises, ie meaning the top fans should probably be exhaust for example (and therefore front intake)

 

on the other hand the cpu might just be a bit hot headed? 

And undervolting fixed it, if i understand correctly?  

 

ps: i see you changed the fan directions, top should still be exhaust imo... you want the (hot) air *out* as fast as possible and not doing sightseeing tour *in* your case 😉  right now its basically choking the cpu pushing the already warm air onto it. (because warm air naturally rises, and these "intakes" are fighting hard to keep the warm air down 👀
