Upgrading CPU on AMD B450 motherboard

Hello all,

I want to upgrade my CPU on my current setup and I'm looking at either 5900X or 5800X 3D and I'm wondering if my motherboard can handle any of these two.
I'm a software engineer and I use VMs with a lot of docker containers and occasionally I like to play some RPG or strategy games.

My current setup is:

  • Gigabyte Aorus M B450 motherboard
  • Ryzen 2600 CPU
  • Radeon RX 5700XT

I don't want to spend money on a new platform atm, waiting for am5 and ddr5 prices to drop.

Given your needs get a 5900x, it's way better than a 5800x3d except at 1080p gaming

Your board should be fine but don't forget to first update your BIOS!

5900x if you are using vms, the 5800x3d is a pure gaming cpu, great at gaming but at everything else its closer to a 5700x due to reduced clockspeeds

Boards fine its a decent midranger

Thank you both for your replies.
Tbh 5900x was my choice too, but I think I saw somewhere that my motherboard has weak vrms for the 5900X and it might cause problems on high loads.

Yeah maybe you won't get up to 4.5GHz all cores but it won"t really hurt your experience

First you can undervolt it to get some more "free" clock with PBO2

Then if you still detect super high VRM temps just put max PPT back to say 120W (vs stock 140W), it's a 5% perf loss for quite lower temps too
