Theyre both great options right now! If you plan on only gaming and dont have and other specific intensive tasks i would just go with AMD. Thunderbolt connectivity is less common on AMD motherboards so if thats something you're excited about then find a board with the compatibility or just go intel.
AMD and Intel both just released their CPUs and their comparable for different work loads, both taking wins in different scenarios. If theres a specific game you plan on playing you can google the two competing (ryzen 5 vs i5 ) cpus and see their performance.
Keep in mind that the latest Ryzen Cpus require DDR5 where as with the latest intel cpu you can go DDR5 or DDR4 depending on which motherboard you choose. So you can save some money going DDR4 board since DDR4 is cheaper right now (with slightly less performance but that doesnt stop you from upgrading down the road if you so choose)
oh i should add you should probably only get ryzen 5 or i5 since those both will give great gaming performance without getting into the more expensive ryzen 7 or i7

It's a great time to be in the hobby. You really can't go wrong with either camp.

I am comfy with what I have, but if I was in the market, I too wouldn't know who to buy since Intel and AMD are making awesome products 😄

13th gen, discounted 12th gen, 5800X3D, or Zen4 are all good.

Microcenter had a deal where you pay $350 for a 12700k and get a free ASUS Z690 TUF....that's hard to beat.
