You can select boot device priorities from you BIOS during startup. So long as the Win8 drive has higher priority than USB devices, you're alright.

If it was on the same disc than it would not show option to boot windows 8 if you installed XP second which can be fixed easily with windows repair. I would imagine booting from a second drive won't have any negative effects as long as you set boot priorities in bios well.
